I keep having my phone completely drained of battery over night, and im not sure why… Each night the phone will easy chew through 30-40% battery. Only thing that helps is putting it in battery saving mode. But feels like a temporary solution....
It’s not comparable. Tailscale creates a virtual network between your devices allowing to reach your server outside your home while other mentioned services create a virtual network to someone else’s server
of course. We, the 1% of technical people on lemmy, we know it. General people only know that apple innovates first, the rest are bad copycats. In general, everything becomes incredibly popular only after apple implements it.
Emoji, nfc payments, third party keyboard, copy and paste, widgets, internet browsers that aren’t a skin of the system browser, wireless charging, 4k video recording it’s all stuff that come to android years or decaded before apple, yet the average people is always thinking that apple is first
I wish phones had a standard bootloader that allows to run a standard os that doesn’t require custom images
“Apt get” and you get patched forever instead of having to buy a new phone every few years or placing all the trust on the stranger that compiles the image of your custom ROM
Otherwise just run the existing android apps on the external display like the Motorola atrix was doing in 2011. Now the phones have a little bit more power, the experience should be better
Note for Americans: here WhatsApp is the de facto communication standard. Literally nobody uses SMS/iMessage/Facebook messenger/signal. And carriers still charge 2 euro for a MMS which completely kills iMessage/RCS (if accidentally send MMS, it’s expensive)...
i also have a subscription that includes everything, but the fact is that in italy, no carrier offers a plan that has even just 1 MMS included each month. Even the most expensive plan with the most expensive carrier does not include a single MMS.
They decided the pricing 20 years ago during the early days of EDGE data pricing. Then they realized that the money that’s flowing from users that accidentally send them is a gold mine, so they left the crazy pricing
In my case it’s just temporary. Every once in a while I’m supposed to take the phone, delete all the useless shit, archive the photos in the computer. Problem is last time I did that was over a year ago because procrastination
MMS yes, by deleting all the APN profiles. Always did it since 20 years ago
Can disable SMS sending by changing the “SMS center number” but I don’t think can disable reception
Luckily in my country the carrier in the early 2000s they decided to scam users with MMS and the “internet button” nearby the “OK” button and not with the “SMS double dip” where both sender and receiver would be charged for texts - too prone to abuse from assholes with large plans
“Internet button scam” explained for young people: in the early 2000s some carriers charged 1-2 euro each time you started an internet session. This for two main reasons:
To block new chat apps. We had “jar” apps like ebuddy, IMO or jacksms that could let the user chat spending much less. They were super optimized for data saving and even at the astronomical 20 euro per MB that they were charging at the time, it meant a chat session with a friend would cost 8 cents instead of 3 euro of texts. I would make two short calls to my friend, it would mean “go online and check the chat”
Get free money from people with fat fingers. Opening the browser would immediately charge the user 2 euro. There was a competition between phone makers to place the “internet button” in the most asshole position. Nearby the “call” button, or as a dynamic button, like at the home screen, the “ok” button would open the internet, while in the menu would be “ok”. I had a Motorola where they placed it in the middle or the D-pad and I always accidentally pressed it. This could be mitigated by avoiding the purchase of a “carrier branded” phone because it could be toggled off. If you bought a phone with Vodafone branding instead every button had a way to let you spend money
We didn’t have unlimited texts long after WhatsApp. Nowadays every plan comes with thousands of them but just because nobody uses them and a big number is free marketing
MMS never free except some scam from Tim and Vodafone where if you paid 10 euro to recharge a PAYG account, they would actually credit you 8 euro and give you 50 MMS “free”, but expiring in 30 days and could only be sent free only if on the same network. But how could someone know if it was on the same network??? Exactly, it was designed preying on the fact that it was possible to change network …
Here Tim and Vodafone have teams of lawyers and professional scammers to brainstorm new ideas to extract more money from users.
For example, a few years ago they decided that the monthly plans should not renew every earth month, but every moon cycle. Can you imagine to rewrite the billing software to charge users every moon cycle instead of every month? A nightmare but they stole billions, because there are 13 moon cycles in a year instead of 12 months.
Another scam that they have on PAYG plans (literally everyone here is on PAYG plans because otherwise there’s a 10 euro month tax derived from the 70s where mobile phone service was a luxury and not a necessity) is that they allow overdrafts up to 2 euro, but with a 2 euro fee. And they do plans like 10.90 monthly but only allowing paying credit in multiple of 10. So you might be 90 cents short, but they would first let you go in negative credit, then charge you 2 euro “overdraft fee” next time you add credit.
So as a population we are always vary of phone carriers. We are always on the defensive “OK, where’s the catch, how would they fuck me”
Luckily I now have a plan from a swiss owned carrier that would take from my credit card the exact money that is needed to renew the PAYG plan. So the credit is always zero and there’s no way that I’m spending more than I should
At this point I’m guessing there’s some internal rule that every once in a while forces them to replace products with inferior, incomplete alternatives written from scratch, and only reach feature parity 3-4 years after the shutdown, when everyone gave up and found an alternative.
The rules apparently states that in order to maximize confusion it must be a similar but different name, that users don’t have a guided migration and that the app must be separately downloaded. It’s extremely forbidden to just update the existing app
yes but until possible i like to have the working weather on my watchface and gadgetbridge is very opinionated against that as it could be used for user tracking, so any kind of internet access is blocked
if i understood right the weather app/watchface needs to be updated for being compatible with this - the official pebble app patched by rebble should work but i think my favorite watchface doesn’t support it
The company that is programming the operating system is investing in a company that makes malware for said operating system. How they can’t be considered involved? Once they invested the $140 million, they would be less likely to consider that malware as such. They won’t block that malware with Google play protect, ignore the privacy issues that would lead to a ban on the play store, and so on.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t don’t see Apple investing even a dollar on a company that is making malware for iPhones
If a phone comes with this pre installed, nobody would ever uninstall it. Or even realize that the annoying ads are coming from this app. They would just think “ads everywhere, android is shit, next phone is going to be an iPhone”.
If you search on Google maps, sponsored results are shown, if you search on the phone app, then you don’t search on maps and you won’t see that sponsored result

Microsoft is ending support for the Windows Subsystem for Android™️ (WSA). As a result, the Amazon Appstore on Windows and all applications and games dependent on WSA will no longer be supported beginning March 5, 2025. Until then, technical support will remain available to customers....
It was a very good product, working very well for dev purposes.
But the Amazon app store… lol… I didn’t see any single app worthy of being downloaded. Literally don’t have any real app. And if accidentally has a good app, it was last updated in 2018
WSA is (was) way more performant and allows resizing to any kind of aspect ratio on the fly instead of creating a specific AVD for each use case. It is (was) awesome for quickly testing UI layouts…
They say that it’s for reducing spam but then i read that in india they allow businesses to pay for sending unsolicited spam to the point that enabling RCS it’s like stating “i like spam, please send more”
Google assistant is already almost useless (at least in my language, I get almost always a “sorry, I didn’t understand” answer, but your mileage may vary), a newer version that can’t interact with anything seems pointless.
“Send Whatsapp to…” - “I can’t interact with Whatsapp”
“Turn off the lights” - “I don’t have access to this”
