Do you ever go back and reread your own posts and find yourself wondering how the hell you managed to say the words that you said? (kbin.social)

Like sometimes I'll make a post and I go back and I reread it and I'm like somebody way smarter than me wrote this, and sometimes I'll go back and reread it and wonder how the fuck was I so stupid as to write this?...

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Sometimes I'm surprised by how eloquent I can sound.

I'm rarely surprised by how stilted and incoherent I can sound. I'm used to that.

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, I can't find it in abandoned mags, else I would have just taken it and cleaned it up.

Song contest, but we can only sing patriotic songs, and only the lame ones, like "America the Beautiful"

The objective metric is how high and long you can draw out notes.

The elephant in the room, as I understand it, is that Kevin McCarthy didn’t get supported by the Democrats after he crossed the aisle earlier.

Possibly because the Democrats offered significant compromises in crossing the aisle, and then a handful of days later, McCarthy was blaming them for the provisions of the bill?

Fuck kind of bite-the-hand-that-feeds-you shit do you expect?

If he had, then he’d still be in place, and could probably have done so again on the Ukraine aid bill months ago and had it pass without any problems.

Fucking doubt.

Can we send airmen OVER Ukraine?

PugJesus,

France recently floated the idea. It's not absurd that the US would feel the need to state a position.

He doesn't.

Russia’s Medvedev threatens to nuke US, UK, Germany, Ukraine if Russia loses occupied territories (kyivindependent.com)

"Attempts to restore Russia's 1991 borders will lead only to one thing - a global war with Western countries with the use of our entire strategic (nuclear) arsenal against Kyiv, Berlin, London, and Washington. And against all other beautiful historic places that have long been included in the flight targets of our nuclear...

Do any of you eat and actually enjoy dino nuggets? (kbin.social)

I'm not really a fan of nuggets in general. I've always been much more of a tendies human. By and large, I find the texture of processed chicken to be extremely revolting. Even as a kid, I thought they were vile and Dino nuggets always seemed to be particularly low-quality....

US lawmakers unveil new bipartisan bill allocating $47 billion in aid funding for Ukraine (kyivindependent.com)

A group of bipartisan lawmakers from the U.S. House of Representatives unveiled on Feb. 16 a combined $66 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, after the Republican-controlled House withheld a vote on a previous version of a funding package.

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

This bill is unlikely to pass, as it displeases both sides of the aisle. The Senate bill is more viable at this point. It just needs to come to a vote.

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

The exact opposite. If they do anything now, Biden might get the credit, and they don't want that. That's why they sunk the last bill.

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Yes, I am sure that McCarthy would have muscled up the gumption to whip the GOP into supporting-

What's that? He had no control over his own caucus and there was no way in hell he would have been able to go against the diaper-shitter supreme?

PugJesus,

"Wow, I didn't realize he was just this genuine about his bootlicking!"

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Tucker went in with the explicit purpose of bootlicking; there were never going to be tough questions asked. Perhaps Putin was genuinely surprised at how naked Tucker's sycophancy was, or perhaps Putin is just trying to make himself look more legitimate by being 'totally prepared for tough questions, no doubt, you guys!'

If Tucker had asked tough questions, the worst that would have happened is that the interview would have been cut short.

Several Western allies pledged to transfer F-16 jets to Ukraine. The exact number of the jets to be delivered has not yet been announced, but The Telegraph estimated in January that the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway are offering as many as 60 F-16s to Ukraine. All of the jets are around 40 years old.

While the frames are around 40 years old, I believe the internals were renovated in the early-mid 2000s as part of the F-16AM upgrade. At least for the Dutch, I think, not sure about Denmark and Norway. In any case, it's good news!

One of the sections Lubinets criticized says that the military command may impose restrictions on the ability of Ukrainian citizens to leave the country. Lubinets said this violated Article 17 of Ukraine's Constitution, which prohibits the military from restricting the freedoms of citizens.

Lubinets also called attention to an amendment that requires a conscript, reservist, or any "person liable for military service" to register an electronic account. Failure to do so would invoke legal consequences.

"(S)uch a provision of the draft law does not comply with the provisions of the Constitution of Ukraine, the Law of Ukraine 'On Personal Data Protection,' and the legal positions of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine on the official interpretation of the right to private and family life."

I don't know the Ukrainian constitution, but these objections sound a little weak on the surface to me. Haven't Ukrainian citizens subject to conscription already been restricted from leaving the country? And registering an account with the government hardly seems like a violation of privacy.

Opinion: Why the Russia sanctions are failing (kyivindependent.com)

When bilateral talks fail to resolve disputes between sovereign countries, aggrieved parties may turn to an international judicial body, such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. Alternatively, treaties or agreements often incorporate provisions for arbitration or mediation of disputes by a pre-designated...

The Cato Institute is a joke.

NYT: Russia using relatively accurate, recently designed North Korean missiles against Ukraine (kyivindependent.com)

Russia used more North Korean missiles to attack Ukraine in the past few days, and U.S. officials believe they are "proving as accurate as Russia's home-built" weapons, the New York Times reported in its Jan. 23 morning briefing.

Is that damnation by faint praise, I wonder? Or just North Korea sending their best?

Slovak culture minister reverses ban on working with Russia, Belarus (kyivindependent.com)

The ministry issued the ban on communicating and cooperating with both countries a week after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on Feb. 24, 2022. This did not affect the performances of Russian artists or organizations that spoke out against the war.

Former NATO chief: Democrats should compromise with Republicans to secure Ukraine aid (kyivindependent.com)

U.S. Democrats should negotiate a deal with Republicans to reach a compromise on aid for Ukraine as a Russian victory would ultimately weaken the U.S., former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in an interview with Politico released on Jan. 17.

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

I don't think he understands what kind of position we're in. Democrats already tried compromising with Republicans on this issue. We offered pretty comprehensive concessions that addressed their claimed concerns. As soon as they got it, they walked back their claims and demanded more.

The GOP is not negotiating in good faith. They're Putin's bootlickers.

House Speaker Johnson says no deal on border, Ukraine aid currently possible ahead of meeting in White House (kyivindependent.com)

Even as U.S. President Joe Biden and top congressional leaders from both parties are set to meet on Jan. 17, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said that the time is not right for a deal on immigration and border issues that could pave the way for approval of new aid for Ukraine.

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

"The time is not right"

Of course. Because it's absolutely about time, and not about the negotiations. The GOP is trying to run out the clock until Russia has some more successes they can use to discourage further aid to Ukraine.

ISW: Russian forces' operational rotations will likely sustain offensive tempo in eastern Ukraine (kyivindependent.com)

Russia's capacity for operational rotations is expected to sustain the pace of localized offensives in eastern Ukraine in the short term, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in its latest update on Jan. 11.

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Ukrainian Main Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) Deputy Chief Major General Vadym Skibitskyi stated on January 11 that Russian forces have 462,000 personnel in Ukraine and that this represents the entire land component of the Russian military.

Georgia, Japan, Finland, China, now's your chance!

Jokes aside, that's a desperate all-in.
