I am on my last remaining straws with malwarebytes. In the new version they're not only promoting their VPN more but it has degraded my laptop's performance severely too (13900hx). Turning realtime protection helps but I have a feeling it probably nerfs it even if you do that.

I need some sort of AV because this is a work computer and supply chain attacks are a thing. Is there any good anti malware these days? (Windows defender is fucking awful and makes your computer run like mud so don't say that)

kernel level devs to the gulags

Vo,
@Vo@noauthority.social avatar

@icedquinn solve?

Vo,
@Vo@noauthority.social avatar

@icedquinn Bots are still around, though. They never completely won.

They made botting part of the economy. The bots that do menial tedious shit that players don't want to do are allowed to stay. The bots that interfere with players doing enjoyable stuff get banned. Things like raiding, PvP, hiscore skilling.

reading this paper on sparse neural network training. they mention trying to track which parts of layers tend to be used or not.

this is what an old ukraine scientist did when he made something called GMDH. he didn't make a huge mesh and mask it out--he has it grow the network layer by layer, then prunes it, and continues.

i discovered this because some obscure mac developer uses this method in software he sells to financial forecasting professionals.

is it possible for a ground loop in the audio interface to cause the speakers to pop?

thing is i don't use the interface to drive those speakers. they use a separate one. the interface goes through usb, so its not actually pushing the sound to those speakers over analogue, but you know

that would be some shit if thats what it was.

Vo,

icedquinn, to random

the lack of a wrist rest is a little woozy. though still need to try the tenting kit and see if that helps a little. maybe this is why people use those extreme risers where the keyboard is lifted straight upwards and you're typing on it like the sides of a pineapple

Vo,
@Vo@noauthority.social avatar

@icedquinn my problem with ergo-split keyboards (based on the whole 1 I've tried) is that you're basically menu-diving every time you need a [ or a ; or a Home/End...

Which, when coding, is all the damn time.

Sadly found that my motivation to retune muscle memory is less than my motivation to plug the old TKL back in.

I'm guessing there is are many layouts that I would end up loving more than standard TKL, but pretty sure I lack the beans for the effort involved in getting there.

Vo,
@Vo@noauthority.social avatar

@icedquinn I got to about 60 wpm out of my usual 95+, but anything with symbols and it dropped to like 5 heh

I think it might still work for a studio kb, where space can be limited and you don't need to do a whole lot more than name files and tracks etc

wonder how well some of those bizzare pathfinding algorithms work for pcb routing.

i remember a diffusion pathfinding thing that would intelligently route pacman ghosts to surround the pacman. it was just based on filling a grid up with scores and "diffusing" the scores across the map.

not sure what good this would do actually :neocat_thonk: trying to path multiple traces at once seems a bit :comfywoozy:

Oh baby!
NCBI's search is very... "library"
Not to say it's unfunctional or anything, just takes a lot of trial and error. Probably half the reason why people consider research as laborious.
