i hate the blanket idea "kids can't consent." it's like saying "kids can't play the piano" well no shit, nobody's born just knowing piano. you have to learn about it first. you have to give them the tools and language to understand consent and respect them when they apply it. plenty of people 18+ don't have the knowledge to properly navigate the idea of sexual consent. it's a fucking problem and a failure of both parenting and sexual education worldwide.
for example, when a kid asks a family member not to kiss them on the cheek, and they do it anyway, and everyone laughs at the childs discomfort you are TEACHING them something. You've taught them that their dislike of a certain kind of touch is not important, and if they make a big deal out of it they will be ridiculed for it. That's a lesson SO MANY children learn before their age hits double digits. and then everyone's left wondering why people don't speak up when they've been sexually assaulted. making a big deal out of it may lead to external negative consequences for them, but staying quiet won't lead to direct external consequences.
if you have kids, teach them consent in places it's applicable. it doesn't even have to be specifically sexual things. just give them the opportunity to develop the communication skills and then with some proper sex ed info they can maybe evaluate the situation themselves
