Clickbait!

Also the article mixes several distinct concepts that cannot be lumped together. The impending robot apocalypse like in the old scifi/action movies, ChatGPT, AGI and narrow AI that enables murder drones aren’t the same thing. And if they are, I’d like to also add “algorithms” and recommendation systems making us more stupid and disuniting society.

I’m not saying it doen’t need to be addressed, but the argumentation is just flawed.

There is one paragraph I completely agree with: »He’s “worried about AI taking over mundane jobs.” This would boost productivity, Hinton added, but the gains in wealth would disproportionately go to the wealthy […]«

I’d say there is a 100% chance of this happening, unless someone steps in and regulates things. That’s the one thing I find nice of Mark Zuckerberg (and a few others), that he gives state of the art language models to the people and enables them to take part in AI at all. Other than that, it’s a game that is entirely directed and controlled by the rich and large tech companies. And we shouldn’t rely on them (or Mark Zuckerberg) shaping our future.

I too think it’s useful. Also the “who needs it” isn’t really an argument. If you can fit it in and people are willing to pay for it… Why not? I mean who needs 5 regular cameras in their phone? One with a marcro lens, one fisheye and one tele plus a regular one plus one on the front… I mean in a normal phone as of todaz the additional flir camera isn’t really changing much.

h3ndrik,

They address that in the last paragraph. I wonder however if this does much. I mean it’s just one of several modes and then certain requirements must be met, too. What would carriers send such requests for in non-emergency scenarios anyways?

Sure. In urban environments the cell tower should be able to determine your location down to a few meters or at least tens of meters. They know the angle from which antenna is in use. And I think I read an article or paper that newer technologies also compensate for the signal delay introduced by the speed of light and your distance… So the phone can hit the slot in the multiplexing correctly. So distance from the cell tower should be known to both parties somewhat precisely. No “active” positioning requests needed. I think requesting the location during an 112 / 911 call has also saved some lives already. I’m not sure if it pops up automatically for the dispatchers, though.
