rmuk,

Honestly I’m loving my FP5. I liked my previous two handsets, but between locked bootloaders and lack of support after a few years they weren’t much use to me. I’m looking forward to a another eight years or so with this one, though.

rmuk,

It may be worth looking into Meshtastic, especially if you know other hikers. €50 will get you a portable node with long range, long battery life, GPS location, mesh routing and no subscription.

rmuk,

Not OP, but my advice: buy rechargeable. IKEA and Kirkland batteries are excellent in my experience.

rmuk,

They’re inflated number for real-world use, but years ago I did a pointless experiment with some friends where we posted a Motorola Android phone to each other to ‘map’ the postal network. The phone was packaged up with everything that could be turn off, only GPRS data enabled and took GPS reading once a minute (or every five minutes when stationary) and posted them to a web server. Even after two weeks it had well over 50% of its battery left.

rmuk,

Phone keyboard fed my writing lol

What?

rmuk,

Fucking Home Assistant. It does so much. I won’t entertain any smarthome gadget that doesn’t support a local standard that gets it into HA. It’s so liberating to be able to buy any old shit from any old vendor and have it work locally 95% of the time.

rmuk,

Some phones, like mine, do have removable batteries. The point of Android is that devices should be varied in design and features rather than interchangeable black mirrors and I think it’s good that Android is still adding features that help facilitate that.
