3/3 say GrapheneOS, alright I’ll check it out!

Yeah that’d be a fun 8 months until they kill it

If it’s not killed by google, it’s replaced with a crappier version. Having developed against many Google APIs, “deprecation” is a very frequent word they use. Most of the time there is no stated reason why an API had to be deprecated, just that it is being deprecated. They also give minimal time to switch over, the worst one I had was PubSub’s API having a mandated migration we had to perform - in under 3 weeks. Very difficult for an already tasked team of engineers who had a mountain of other more pressing work. Why I actively push against working on GCP, or google products at all. I’ve successfully pushed 2 companies away from using Google cloud now.

Microsoft, as an example of the opposite, will have years long deprecation strategies, and usually go overboard with making sure engineers have a good replacement, and documentation on how to migrate. They have a lot to be hated for, but damn are they good with managing downstream engineers.

am I the only one who just doesn’t care at all about foldable? Like, I’m a pretty techie guy, I’ve always loved new gizmos, but damn am I just unimpressed with folding phones. Folding screens? Sure. I love the idea of rolling up a TV and taking it to a friend’s house in the future for multiplayer, but phones? Meh.

Standard Google. Make 2 competing products. See which one is successful. Force all of the other users to successful one even if there are less features. 5 years later kill off that one for another meaningless changeover.

They stopped innovating in the late 2000s. It’s all been pointless marketing rebrands since.

thanks, that’s 90% what I use assistant for

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Generative AI is different, it can generate better responses that aren’t just programmed canned responses. However I fully agree with you, they’re trying their hardest to do a bullshit rebrand with it. They could have just swapped it out with assistant and I would have been ecstatic. By rebranding it I get that same bad taste in my mouth whenever marketing elbows themselves into the conversation.

For me it’s that notifications should be opt in, not opt out.

@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yeah yeah yeah long standing design guides and rules like margins. Those aren’t hip and cool right now so let’s force thousands of wasted dev hours to enforce a change only we like that will probably stay way past it’s time!

Exactly why I never pulled the trigger on them. They always looked so nice, but they just couldn’t get the tech to match. I’m not going to wear a watch that doesn’t even make it through a workday.

literally all it would take for me to consider Samsung over the Pixel again would be:

  • No Samsung bloatware

What are they paying those high priced marketing consultants? I’m pretty sure I’m cheaper.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Personally, I’ve had Pixels since the pixel 2 and I’ve never had an issue with them except for normal wearing out. They’ve lasted longer than any samsung phone I’ve owned (granted that was pre-pixel 2). What I liked about Pixel is that it’s pretty much stock Android, with google play stuff on it, vs samsung which I felt was overloaded with both Google stuff and Samsung stuff.

As for Google - well, remember Google has it’s hands in both systems, getting Samsung doesn’t mean you’re de-googling, Google still gets it’s cut.

Software yeah flash away, but then it’s just purely a hardware comparison.

I have the 7 and have never had a complaint. Got it because I accidentally ruined my last one.

Can’t move the search bar. I’ll be honest the thought had never occurred to me until you asked

Great, so they’re slowly making or more brick like. I should flash my homes with something else …

@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I just asked that the other day to do what I would consider. One of the most basic tasks, add something to my shopping list. It didn’t and I got to the store and it said I had no list, so I really don’t know why I have them anymore except for speaker abilities

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Has anyone had any success flashing a Google home? I’d be interested in putting a custom assistant on there

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Just like Cortana. They had good luck in one small niche (vs code) and now they’re going to just shotgun it into every product

I just don’t understand how anyone could base a company on an exploit. That is what it is in the end - the found an exploit and took advantage of it. Seems like the logical thing would be for apple to immediately close the exploit.

The answer is right there. If Apple wanted iMessage on Android it would be there. It isn’t so they don’t want it.

I think a combination. Newer cars will require newer phones, older cars probably won’t support newer phones. If I had an older car I may keep an old phone and hotspot it or something.

Or 3rd party radio

Linus lost all credibility to me, I used to barely trust him, now just not at all
