I hate that the Internet has turned into a manipulation game to wring out as much money and clout from as possible.
I hate tag whores. I hate content aggregators. I hate short-form videos. I hate SEO grinding. I hate follow4follow. I hate bots. I hate being reminded to like and subscribe.
@Weeble outrage and clout is how they keep people using the platform instead of building actual meaningful relationships with other users. Probably won't get better but at least you don't have to participate and to enjoy some of other places that aren't plagued with it
@whut@Pawlicker@Weeble it was definitely in stuff like live journal back in the day but seeing that LJ was proto-SNS and the web was much dispersed, a lot of things were easier to avoid
@koimoa@Weeble@whut lj was a corner of the internet, Tumblr and then Twitter were increasingly centralized and giving said groups more power.
Tumblr seems quiet because the porn ban was the site being declared a suicide with two shots to the back of the head and tied to the railroad tracks.
The closest replacement is cohost UI wise, but the code sure as hell isn't open, it's a walled garden by design, and the community isn't diluted but rather a microcosm of tumblrs finest.
@koimoa@Weeble@whut the other thing with Tumblr is being it's been nearly 6 years since Verizon broke the internet, people have nostalgia for it like this side of the internet does for 4chan given how often tumblr screenshots are posted.
Unlike 4chan people never ate the loss and moved here, and it's community is too neurotic to do so anyway. It's more neurotic than the "FEDS could be here" imageboard posters.
@Pawlicker@Weeble@koimoa@whut From what I saw, Tumblrinas moved to Twitter, got sucked into current-thingism, then started trying out Bluesky before finding out they ban porn there, too.
@Pawlicker@mrsaturday@Weeble@koimoa@whut it's the Google+ problem: Why the fuck do I need Twitter 1.1? The fediverse at least has a reason to exist: It's not corpo controlled
@coolboymew@Pawlicker@Weeble@koimoa@whut Because rocket man bad
And the fediverse isn't prone to NGO fuckery and C-suite whims, so we need to make a new fediverse with closed-source protocols and centralized control over federation. We should be really worried about Bluesky. They're even branding themselves as the new Fediverse and trying to make themselves the corpo answer to Mastodon's shortcomings.
I love how the refugees complained about it being hard to use and that they were gatekeeping but that's what bluesky does but worse. Hell you can only out alphanumeric characters in your username so no _ for you.
@Pawlicker@Weeble@koimoa@whut I saw JP Twitter complaining about them banning porn, so that makes sense. I guess I know what they were there for, then.
They had such broad versions of the definition that artists quit. Sonic porn is bad to furaffinity admins, which is why many of them went to pre-ban Tumblr/Twitter/newgrounds.
That whole fiasco is why I never take anything like that at face value.
@Pawlicker@mrsaturday@Weeble@whut art sites are especially bad when it comes to this. I haven't found one that hadn't rolled back a rule or two after assuring their users that it wouldn't, or either a good UX, or censorship involved.
@mrsaturday@mint@Weeble@koimoa@whut inkbunny made a rule that banned pedo advocacy and the meltdowns from some of the people here was immense despite all the people coming out in support of the rule image.png image.png
@whut@Pawlicker@mrsaturday@Weeble@mint imagine not wanting to appeal to everyone as an open art platform and wanting feds to scan your servers constantly
@mrsaturday@Pawlicker@Weeble@whut yeah I don't understand why jp Twitter users would go to a place more restricted than Twitter lmao, it's not like they can't use Misskey or Fedibird
@koimoa@Weeble@whut@mrsaturday it's hype and pr awareness. Western furry artists moved to bluesky en masse or said they did (until they saw the numbers).
Because most refuse to move and then lose all of their followers and have to rebuild an audience. That's why most on bluesky still have an account they use on Twitter
@Pawlicker@Weeble@whut don't even get me started on cohost. Any community that takes forever to set a stance on what can be posted is one I'll avoid. Same with Pillowfort.
@koimoa@Weeble@whut I don't think cohost will be around in a few years. Even bluesky is more likely to exist longer given there's people still running hotline servers in 2024.
