I think I've decided on a DAC but then I'll read reviews of my chosen model and they're like "oh this is good but for just $50 more for model B you'll get a HUGE quality bump" and then you read the Model B reviews and it's like "well this is better but if you pay just $50 more for Model C the sound is LEGENDARY" and then you read the reviews for model C...

this is how they get you :blobcatinsane:

@RustyCrab audiophile gear is snake oil incarnate.

@Wiz it's gonna be like everything else where there's a point of severe diminishing returns and that's usually MILES below the peak price point. It's just a matter of finding where that point is.

@RustyCrab Against my better judgement, I'll tag @dotnet as he'll have some insights as to where that magical pricepoint is.

@RustyCrab @Wiz I'd say it isn't worth spending more than $100 on a DAC and that too should be based on what features you want (eg if you don't want to get a separate amp, does it have enough power for your headphones, and if you want to use sensitive IEMs, is the noise floor low enough so you don't hear hissing, or if you want features like being able to also act as a bluetooth receiver dongle to use your wired headphones on the go).

Otherwise they're all going to be basically transparent nowadays.

@dotnet @Wiz the headphones were 300 ohm which is in the "hard to drive" category according to spec sheets. I did research on components and I think I've got I decent setup. I probably overspent based on hypotheticals but the setup is capable of balanced output (I don't pretend to know what that means in practical terms) and the only thing I'm lacking now is crx cables but... Just in case I want to take advantage of that I guess.

Also "no extra drivers" was a big selling point for me since I will be using this on windows and linux. Seems most boxes had the usual shitty proprietary driver issues.

I lived like a miser this year so I have some disposable income sitting around. May as well do something exotic with it.

better buy that $200 cable too or it's basically worthless! /s

@smug my favorite is $400 digital cables because yeah that's how physics works
