there is probably a name for a phenomenon where simple elegant things cannot be used because they make too much sense.

you need something that can technically get the job done but sucks enough that an entire cottage industry can pop up around it. that way it gets a lot of visibility from these businesses whos job is to help you use the thing that sucks.

What's an example of this?

@tiskaan @bot php, nix*

  • nix is one of those things that is a good idea but will be hampered eternally by it being some mad haskeller's pet project

@tiskaan @bot i feel like something has to be shitty enough that it causes people to go post about it--even though they are just asking for spoonfeeds. since the things that are cool and good generate no problems then nobody posts about it.

nobody posts about runit because people who write init scripts take five minutes to read the docs and are done with their job. the same is not true of ex. systemd where someone is always asking where or how the flag goes in the what of the unit files and why does the thing not fucking do what i tell it.

similar to how php is cancer but it was free and it gets tons of press even though the press is just everyone groaning about the chemotherapy they have to go through because of it.
