georgia,

I fell for the no systemd meme which is why I run devuan instead of Debian. I have bedrock Linux so I think I'll try runit before giving up on alternative inits and reinstalling plain Debian.

@georgia probably try windows 10? its really good i like it a lot

@georgia run it is fine for a simple system but not enough for a workstation. Anti systemders are crackheads.

@shrimp @georgia the fuck are you doing that you need systemd to solve for you?

shrimp,
@shrimp@shrimpposter.club avatar

@pernia @georgia basic dependencies between services

pernia,
@pernia@cum.salon avatar

@shrimp @georgia like what

shrimp,
@shrimp@shrimpposter.club avatar

@pernia @georgia anything that uses the network, anything that uses a database like postgresql. there's two examples

pernia,
@pernia@cum.salon avatar

@shrimp @georgia so you need systemd to use your network, and you need systemd to start postgres for you

@pernia @georgia you can't read. I'm referring to starting services after the network, not starting the network (though systemd-networkd does actually work pretty well so may as well use that to start the network if you want)

@shrimp @pernia @georgia all that shit worked without systemd for decades. systemd is okay now but it took years for it to compete with the reliability of a godawful ball of shell scripts.

It was poorly designed by an asshat, so there’s a reason it took so long. It still had issues with ordering at odd times just a couple of years ago.

@thendrix @pernia @georgia @sun @shrimp i've kept seeing people sleep on runit/s6 but they always just handwave why they absolutely need systemd.

generally they don't, its just a bandwagon effect

@shrimp@shrimpposter.club avatar

@icedquinn @pernia @georgia @sun @thendrix I haven't slept on runit/s6 I just don't think they are as good

I’m surprised more of you kids haven’t wrote an init system yet given how docker works. I wrote a distributed init system for syncing game servers on pods a few years back.

@thendrix @pernia @georgia @sun @shrimp no reason to. it would have to be fully api compatible with systemd due to the bandwagoning
