what is the usecase for good software?

@Inginsub lack of some features is expected but that's not normally the main problem.
Usually it's that they don't take user feedback seriously.

@RustyCrab the ui in gimp is notoriously awful, and they only made it worse over time. 3.0 will supposedly fix the most common problems, whatever those are supposed to be (probably it still being somewhat usable: no users = no feedback = no problems), but I have zero faith in it at this point

@Inginsub krita is pretty good for most cases, but their color mask tool is the blackest retard gorilla nigger shit I have ever seen. I usually just end up cloning the line layer, thinning it manually and then using the paint bucket tool. That's most likely what it's doing anyway but getting it to actually invoke correctly is nearly impossible for me. The buttons just do random unpredictable shit.

@RustyCrab @Inginsub what is color mask supposed to do? i know basically nothing about image editing or art related tools tbh. i pretty much just use editors to add alpha and crop images.

@icst @Inginsub the color mask basically uses "AI" and you're supposed to mark the areas where color is supposed to be and it will filling the whitespace in a way that blends in with the line layer far smoother than what the paint bucket can do.

The problem is that the controls are beyond baffling. You will click a button once. It will do one thing. You will click it again later in the same state you were in before and it will do something seemingly completely fucking random. It's difficult to explain if you haven't used it. Just go try using it and try not to pop a blood vessel.

@icst @Inginsub I was trying to make :niggakagi: with the color mask and after something like 7 failed attempts I gave up and simply manually extracted the line layer and filled out color underneath it, then overlayed the lines on top again.

@Inginsub @icst being a little less vague

  • sometimes the colors will not update no matter what you do
  • more often than not alpha color will not be recognized correctly
  • almost never will your specified transparency color actually be transparent on the final version
  • frequently you will get stuck in preview mode and have to restart krita to leave
  • many times even if your regions are clearly separated by a line it will just fill the whole thing as one layer. I have yet to see a pattern in this to predict whether it will or not.

Many times you'll hit the button to actually render the colors and it will just take you into some kind of different preview mode and sometimes the mask will just turn completely invisible. Both required restarting krita to fix.

There is of course no explanation or feedback to any of this.

it should be known tht gimp is made mostly for the developers themselves, other users arent really important to the project iirc

@mischievoustomato @Inginsub what in god's name kind of defense is this

mischievoustomato,
@mischievoustomato@rebased.taihou.website avatar

it's no real defense. that was the reason d'etre for gimp's creation and from what i know it remains this way to this day
