Finally got the shipping notification for the last of the hard-to-get pieces of FSE's new hardware. There's some small shit to acquire (stuff you can pick up anywhere) and I have to do some setup once it's here and move some shit around, but it feels good to eliminate one of the question marks in the schedule.
There is also going to be a surprise later. Prepare to be disappointed! (It is not bad news: it is good news but it's underwhelming.)

Global Foundries is set to receive $1.5 billion in government funds under the CHIPS Act, and another $600 million from New York state in one form or another.
Global Foundries was originally the manufacturing arm of AMD, and was then spun off as a separate company, acquired the semiconductor operations of AMD, and was bought by the UAE, not necessarily in that order.
The company is planning to invest $12 billion over the next decade, mostly on specialised production like gallium nitride and expanding bulk processes on 12nm.
Is this money well spent? Probably not; if it were, Global Foundries wouldn't need the money. Is it money better spent than almost anything the US federal government does? Maybe.

I am legitimately dumbfounded. There is no obvious writeup anywhere on Unreal's internal architecture. This is the most used engine on the planet and the most I can find is bot spam and an old shut down wiki with hardly anything left on it.

@deprecated_ii@eee Most likely the problem is some shitty coding where game actually does some check "map is opened" perpetually, when its opened. Or its some shitty engine which cant handle realtime resource loading, and map was deemed non-essential, so its slow. Some unity engine devs advice to use 8*8 textures, because engine cant load anything.
I am more annoyed when typing prompts kill framerate to single digits. Its clearly some bug, but why bother fixing it.

I'm not making definitive statements on how good/bad AI effects will be on artist employment in the game industry.
But what I can say is that most people would be HORRIFIED at the amount of work making game art actually takes if humans just do it raw. It's nearly incomprehensible until you witness it. Even with generative AI I don't think art teams are in serious danger of being mass unemployed.
@deprecated_ii@PunishedD@RustyCrab Photorealism is easier because you can just use a photo as a texture, and you have infinite reference materials, and everything will be in the same style. Making stylized stuff is harder, especially when you have to consider resolution of meshes and textures. This is why a lot of stuff use pixelshit graphics or photorealistic stuff, its just easier to make.
