Alright alright IK what y'all bout to say. This dog was supposed to die yesterday, why you showing us dead dogs, tapir?

Well, the dog found a foster for a few days, so it's time has been extended by an unknown amount of time.

Also they have an adoption page through ADOPETS which I have never heard of lol just use petfinder like a normal shelter wtf

There ain't much info on her, they say she's spayed, 4 years old (I would take that as 'adult' since adult estimates are a crapshoot, so between 2-7ish) and she's 60lbs. She is in a dog play group which tells me she isn't dog reactive, but they do state that she was skittish of eager dogs, and was slow to approach.
Vollys say she's easy going, good on walks, good manners. Calm demeanor.

Her adoption fee also appears to be free.

Bruh I actually don't know what to do.
My turtle takes a heat lamp and UVB that is now banned.
I could get away with it bringing him outside for a couple hours a day to get the UVB but how the hell am I going to keep him warm and basking indoors? Should I just try to make an outdoor enclosure? Would that even be safe with hail and wind?
Bans are retarded. Butt out of my animals if you don't know dick about them.

Tepid_Tapir, to random

yeah that's the hashtag I'm going with

Figured we'll start with LA county shelter because I just heard they are nearing 200%!!!! overpopulation

The local gov tried to push for no kill way too soon. Basically, any dog that they are planning to euthanize gets 3 weeks notice, so rescues and shit can pull them. They've recently reduced it to 72h notice.

I'll be honest if I ran the place, I'd hire vets and tech to euth from longest stay until I get back to 100% capacity. Regardless of how cute. 200% capacity with the same amount of space and workers is not OK.

There used to be only 18 individual black-footed ferrets in the wild. A mix of a specialized breeding program and reintroduction, maintaining and restoring habitat, and even cloning one male helped get that number to over 1000 today.

However captive breeding has to be really supervised, and lineages are registered. When people get their hands on shit, they enjoy breeding in mutations and inbreeding to get more of this shit that wouldn't help in the wild.

First image is a wild ferret. The rest is shit we did, and why we can't just let out the PetSmart ferrets into the woods.

Officer Myron Woodson of Sturgeon, Missouri, is under fire after opening fire on a blind and deaf small dog on May 19, 2004.

Officer Woodson was responding to the dog at large, who slipped out of the owner's yard - and thus slipping it's collar - earlier that day.

The officer came upon the dog, noting that the dog 'broke it's neck' (lol) and later stated "I’m not gonna let you bite me, you’re looking all cray."

After unsuccessfully trying to capture the dog multiple times, the officer debates wrapping the dog up in a towel before finally pulling his gun out and shooting the dog as the dog began to walk towards the tree line. In the footage a woman is heard coming out of her home complaining about the shots fired when she had kids with her at the time.

The 13lb Shihtzu mix, named Teddy, was owned by a Nicholas Hunter. According to Hunter, Teddy was 5 years old at the time of death, was born deaf but went blind a few years ago. As such, the dog tends to walk with a head tilt.

The person who called the dog in, a city worker that would like to remain anonymous to avoid being fired, noted several times they emphasized the dog was not dangerous and simply drinking water next to them.

According to Hunter, the officer said he did not feel like the dog was a threat but thought it was in pain and believed the best course of action was to put the animal down.

Later a Facebook post by the City says they believed that the officer acted within his authority, and that the animal was a rabies risk. The owner did say Teddy was up to date on rabies vaccine.

Firstly, bro, how bad can you be with a fucking catch pole? You literally had it AROUND THE DOG'S NECK multiple times, that's when you tighten it bro. If you can't do that, get a slip lead or a rope with a slip knot and use that instead.
The dog does not have signs of rabies, full stop. It doesn't act like any stage or variant or symptom of rabies. He is very cognizant of it's surroundings, it's not ataxic, it's not drooling. It just doesn't look like rabies.
Also my man, you're afraid of a 13lb dog, are you gonna shoot a 150lb person if they walk around blind with a head tilt? The fuck. You could PUNT that dog.

Officer Woodson has been placed on leave and Kevin Abrahamson, the mayor, resigned because of community backlash over Teddy’s killing.

Is no one else talking about this?

TL;DR -
>man interrogated for 17h straight to get him to confess he killed his father
>Lied and told him the father was found dead with multiple stab wounds
>included not allowing him to have his medications or go to a hospital
>they brought HIS DOG into the room and told him the dog would have to be euthanized
>They take the man out on a car ride telling him they were going to a hospital; brought him to his home instead and pressured him to say where he killed his father
>later cops found the father was alive and visiting a friend
>never told this to the man, left him in interrogation room where he attempted suicide
>brought him to an asylum, where he still doesn't know that his dog and dad are still alive
>they dropped the dog off at a shelter instead of with family, the shelter was given 0 info but were able to track owner down thanks to the dog being chipped

@graf @j @Mitsu NGL if I saw a raccoon coming towards me in broad daylight, I would absolutely assume something fatal is affecting it

I had dealt with a young red fox with hydrocephalous that approached me in broad daylight that ended up needing to be euth.

We've also had squirrels that people imprinted on purpose, then they hit sexual maturity and become dicks, but still chase humans down for food. Tried to re-integrate them into the wild, but they were chasing people and one had to be decapped when it bit a child feeding it. After that we decided to euth the sibling to avoid further catastrophe.

Don't imprint on wild animals. It's really not cute when I have to cut their head off for DEC.

I feel like Wednesdays is just when I report on baby animals born in zoos and wildlife refuges

Everyone, welcome Bisque, a male blue duiker. He was born in February to mom Kadidi.

The blue duiker is one of the smallest species of Duiker. They are least concern but there are 12-16 subspecies with varying levels of rarity, and they are commonly hunted for bushmeat. Not many zoos carry the blue duiker, so a conservation project was put into place to get a thriving and varied gene pool, ya know just in case.

I'll never forget that time someone at one of my shelter jobs fostered a chocolate kitten solo without any of it's siblings or mom, then when it came time to fix the cat she stopped showing up to work and ghosted the shelter completely. There is 0 chance that cat isn't in a breeding mill.

Tepid_Tapir,

@mjdigspigs @tyler Someone who takes a random moggy with 0 health or behavior history is definitely a backyard breeder and shouldn't be supported.

The person in question, though you wouldn't know her, was also quite a shitty human.

I just find it funny that an animal who almost died due to overpopulation, is now out there contributing to over-population. Because that cat is not likely creating more brown cats unless they inbreed, lol

Tepid_Tapir,

@mjdigspigs @tyler Animals can be livestock and also be treated humanely and respectfully, these things are not mutually exclusive.

If growing up means having a disregard for everything that isn't a human, then I'm fine with never growing up.

Found this a little late for Easter, but lilies can really fuck a cat up.

The lilies at the top there only need a speck of pollen in the cat's drinking water to cause total organ failure. Or if pollen got on their fur and licked it off.

Even if you don't have these lilies on your property, if your cat goes outside some people may put them outside especially Easter lilies when they begin to die. So keep an eye out for symptoms.

It's not swarths of cat killings and missing cats over the past 2 decades that is making UK cat owners say they had enough and keep their cats indoors...

No, instead it is a string of cats (roughly 80) that have had patches of their hair shaved in the past year...

Owners are freaking out thinking this is abuse - it's not. Owners are worried the hair will never grow back right - it will, it just takes quite a while for the hair to 'age out'. Owners this this hurts the cats - it doesn't, in fact whoever is doing this hasn't burned or nicked the skin. Owners believe this is traumatizing to the animal - Fair, it may very well give the PTSD by bullying from the neighborhood cats, but we can't diagnose trauma in animals yet as it's literally impossible to diagnose so :akarinShrug:

In fact I think whoever is doing this might be some sort of groomer. The lines are really straight and the cuts are very even.

Friday Fun - Have you or anyone you knew claimed to have a wolf/high content (75-99%) wolfdog?

If so this post is for you.

First photo;
Top left is 'claimed' ~90% wolfdog. Bottom left is a husky/gsd mix. Top right is an 84% 4th gen wolfdog. Bottom right is just a straight wolf.

High content wolfdogs and wolves are going to be very difficult to tell apart. High content wolfdogs (male or female) will breed only once a year, from December to March. No exceptions.

High content wolfdogs with have a solid black nose, light colored eyes, solid black lip and eye liner pigmentation.

The ears are actually fairly small, which is a huge give away imo. They are well-furred, and extremely thick, rounded at the tips, and set quite high on the head. (image 3)

High content wolfdogs will also have paws that point more outwards. The back legs are cow-hocked (hock is set inwards, making the feet splay outwards), and they have a longer stifle than most dogs (image 4)

I find that most people claiming to have a wolf/ high content wolf dog have at most a low content, or more likely a convincing gsd/husky mix

image/png
image/png
image/png

Tepid_Tapir,

@sjw That's crazy, blue eyes are exceptionally rare in high content wolfdogs.

Tepid_Tapir,

@sjw that's a pain, I knew people who do dog DNA tests to find out their dog has wolf or coyote in it and then they have to get a license and do all this extra bs as a result.

Tepid_Tapir,

@sjw there are people with high content wolfdogs that are good with people, dogs, kids, etc, but it usually takes a lot of work to get there and the dogs have a lot of other requirements, like some can't be house trained due to strong marking tendencies etc.

I tried to hang out in wolfdog circles just to understand their lines of thinking a bit more (the people who seek out high content wolfdogs), but I found the majority of them the be closet wolfaboos so my references to wolfdogs remain to be among wolfdog rescues, whom largely discourage them as pets. There are absolutely people out there though that believe high content wolfdogs can be fantastic pets with the right owner. I just have little communication with them.

the issue with large carnivores in general like lions and tigers is that they can very easily kill us. Domestication of these animals will likely result in a smaller version and basically be a savannah or bengal, both of which still kinda suck in their f1 and f2 gens. I'm really not a big fan of trying to domesticate even more mammals, since we fucking ruin everything we touch.

I think I have sporadically posted about the Lykoi, I was sorta excited about it because I thought it was cute, original, and a breed of cat I could see myself actually gasp purchasing!

Welp nix all of that cuz look at this tea 🍵 I have here on them;

Lykois tend to develop a skin issue when they hit 3-5y old. Being that this breed happened about from a feral cat mutation, it is likely when they started breeding this mutation breeders had no clue before pumping out lots of kittens. But it's been like 15 years or so, so now they're just covering it up.

Would also explain why cat fancier associations (this is like the cat version of kennel clubs) has just dropped probationary period of recognizing this breed and are wiping their hands with it.

Long story short, the skin issue is they develop large and numerous sebaceous cysts - in laymen terms, they are covered in huge, deep zits. Sometimes they pop on their own, otherwise they need to manually expressed :vomit: to relieve pressure. Some owners report cats biting/scratching them open.

I am sparing y'all the disgusting photos of them being popped open.

Several smaller cysts on the back and sides of a lykoi

An act to ban soring practices was introduced to the Senate earlier last month, called the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) act.

Soring is the act of using caustic chemicals, chains, weighted shoes, hard objects, cutting and other painful techniques to force horses to perform the artificial, high-stepping gait. This gait, known as the "Big Lick", is a hallmark of the Tennessee walking horse industry.

The idea is to make the feet painful to stand on, so that they often take 'breaks' with each foot by raising it higher than normal during walking, giving each foot a little more rest time. This is pretty bad for large hooved animals because they have a lot of weight bearing on 4 small legs.

This practice was actually banned in 1970's, but it's not actually well enforced. This new act would make it more difficult for horse trainers to use these tactics.

The walk looks fucking stupid anyways.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE cats in businesses, especially the attention whoring cats that can not stop being up people's asses (sorry, cat allergy sufferers.)

HOWEVER I think the bare minimum if you're going to do this, is to have like an 'air lock' situation, 2 sets of doors so if the cat gets out, it's still not outside. Otherwise, you're putting a lot of stress on your customers to not accidentally kill/lose your cat/s.

the door to a business with a poster on it asking patrons to not let the cats out, especially Odin. There is a large photo of Odin on the poster. Underneath the poster, behind the door, is a cat that looks just like Odin, presumably Odin, waiting for the door to open

A video has gone viral of a Kiwi named Paora at the Miami Zoo... But for all the wrong reasons.

The video shows the New Zealand bird being taken out of the enclosure and pet by the public. When the bird tries to hide, it is pursued by zookeepers.

There's a few issues with this; Firstly, the Kiwi is a vulnerable species in the wild. They are also not an easy species to keep and reproduce; they are quite fragile, lower life expectancy in captivity, only 13 zoos outside of New Zealand even have kiwis and they all together have under 50 individuals.

The shy, solitary, nocturnal bird had forced human interaction under bright lights. In some clips, the handler is seen demonstrating the animal's sensitive whiskers by pulling at them, holding the beak down, scruffing the bird, and revealing the bird's hiding spot when he tries to run away. In some stills, you can see the bird's feathers are puffed up, often a stress or sick response, and the head/beak rests on the ground, which is a shutting down behavior due to stress.

This wasn't just a one-and-done animal encounter though; This was several hours, 4 days a week, for 4 years.

All <50 Kiwis in the US were originally loaned by NZ in an attempt to get breeding going and help conservation efforts, not as guest entertainment. Paora was a kiwi hatched in the US by an unknown zoo, and was loaned to Miami Zoo with the assumption of going towards a breeding program. The organization that lent the Kiwi to Miami has not come forward.
