I machined a new bearing support for the ER11 spindle. The previous one had too much play, at least 0.1mm, which is just plain unusable. The bearing is a slight press fit in this one. I will measure runout (in the er11 cone) again.

@Nixie @uint8_t ah, I did not understand that, sorry. There are so many smaller tools to do that! There is a standalone stlink programmer somewhere. Openocd is annoying.

I am using a blackmagic probe directly from gdb but I do not recommend that for simple use cases.

Daddy daughter weekend fun in the lab.

Samples were an epoxy embedded rough-polished cross section of a rock we found in the backyard and an old Pentium 4 Willamette die that's seen better days.

She's still learning but I think is starting to get the basics of using the joystick. I don't trust her to focus quite yet, but with 5-20x LWD optics there's plenty of margin between properly focused and an objective crash so I'm not worried about her accidentally bumping the Z axis and breaking something before I can react.

A toddler sitting at a lab bench using a joystick-controlled microscope to look around an IC die

@azonenberg 5yo likes to play with supertuxkart with a joystick, but she doesnt react fast enough yet to follow the road and has difficulty to maintain the throttle level while managing turns.

Ever seen an encoder and thought: "Damn, that looks pretty af!"

Dual encoder, I'll save it for later. Now I'm hunting for a detentless 24ppr encoder PEC12R-4017F-N0024

So far I have only found it on Digikey and I have either to pay 18€ or buy 50€ of stuff...

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@Nixie for small surface PCBs, I agree. Anything larger than 50x50 gets expensive fast

Mastodon.social rolling out the red carpet for Threads is like an independent shop inviting a supermarket to set up next door.

But what’s done is done. And I’ve wasted enough words on this whole sorry affair over the last year.

So this is the last you’ll hear about it from me. When, eventually, you’re writing your “what went wrong?” articles, feel free to look up what I’d written on the issue back when.

take an empty glass jar (the kinda size you get pasta sauce in), clean it, let it sit in hot water.

one large red onion thinly sliced on a mandoline. one tablespoon of kosher salt, one tablespoon of sugar, 3-4 tablespoons of white vinegar (I used rice vinegar), about ten whole peppercorns.

boil a kettle. add all the stuff to the jar. top to the brim with boiling water. attach lid firmly. let it cool for an hour, then put it in the fridge overnight.

goes super good on salmon bagels.

18+ f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland will it work if my salt is not kosher? (seeing myself out)

A coworker asked me if I could print him a Gandalf's pipe, and of course I said yes.

I'm going to try to print it in this orientation, just so it is hollow and allows him to blow confetti out of it.

If that doesn't work, I'll print it sideways (can't split it because it's an OBJ not an STL file)

f4grx,

So, I did some machining. This is a fixture.

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

This fixture allowed me to polish a plastic optical fiber in a specific pattern, eg, to thin it to half its thickness. And I got this, a fiber light combiner/splitter. There is some cross talk since the fiber core is extremely large. Solutions are known to reduce this crosstalk. I need more fixtures for assembly, and a longer combining length, and solutions to better protect the fiber (nylon maybe), but this is promising.

Light combining action, showing only the right half of th fiber being illuminated.
Combining action, showing the left half of the fiber being illuminated
The coupler itself. Both branches are friction fit in the small tube.

In the end I have bought this IP camera, to monitor the 3D printer while I'm on my walks.

f4grx,

@Nixie i'm always wondering if these cameras communicate with chinese servers.

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@Nixie we so much need an openWRT for cams.

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland @Nixie the test is easy. Put the plastic part in the microwave oven for 30 seconds, with a glass of water to absorb the surplus RF power. If the plastic part becomes hot, don't use it for anything RF. White PVC is usually fine, gray one not always. White ABS and PLA should be ok, black one could have carbon based pigment and that would be a problem.

I'm looking up for a childrens full picture book (art drawing covering the complete pages) about a steam train operator that takes the train in the first pages and you see explanations of how tunnels are dug and other things, and when he gets out in the last pages he is completely covered in soot and meets his gf.

Anyone has a memory of a book like that?

@F4EGX_Nico @Nixie mineclone 2 mobs are quite hard. I was also very addicted last week and saw it was bad for me. Also, I tested minetest game, which has no mobs, but this has cut all motivation. Most of the game is mining large volumes of underground with stone pickaxes, which is quite annoying tbh. iron is at Y<-128, which is slow.
I also know there is an easy /giveme command that cuts even more interest.

so I'm playing during RER commute but I'm back at my regular activities.

I assembled a new battery pack for my computers UPS, this is only meant to be temporary so I cheaped out on the fuses (about 10A ea, they use olfactory trip indication. 24V ~30Ah
I have to work out what real batteries I'm going to get ($300-$600) if a windfall doesn't happen to come along.

image/jpeg

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@RueNahcMohr i am starting to get interested in home UPS in cade something happens. My home consumes around 300-500W continously with peaks at 4000W for cooking. I think a home inverter is doable. Bonus ideas point to make that synchronized and able to inject watts in the mains circuit without disconnection.

@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

Wow. Did you know this? There exist power over fiber components that can provide 3v 180mA from 1.5W of 800nm infrared light coming through a standard multimode optical fiber.

These are very expensive, but also very cool!

https://www.farnell.com/datasheets/2785190.pdf

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@jaseg 😁

I dont really know what 1.5W of light looks like. My only reference is my head light, which has a 200 lumen CREE T6. I see online that a 10W CREE T6 generates 1000 lumen, so my 200lm headlight should use approximately 2W. Which is very bright and not a good idea to look at frontally.

All of that concentrated in one 50um fiber core looks like a lot of photons in a small place!

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@Nixie @jaseg get well soon!
