sabreW4K3,

The number of heat related deaths continues to grow and yet we continue to drag our heels on solutions.

sabreW4K3,

It is the future, but not the way everyone thinks. Everyone thinks drones will be for the last mile, but the reality is they’ll be for the last five metres. Amazon will have a vehicle that can drive down your road and the drone will take your package, fly out and return to the van. Each van will have a minimum of six drones and the only time the driver has to stop is when all drones are out of the vehicle. I imagine that consumers will be able to set preferences, like leave at this particular spot or only attendance required, for which it would ring the bell/phone/app of the person.

Once they sort out autonomous driving, then humans will vanish from the delivery process all together.

sabreW4K3,

For those with Termux installed, the Play Store is presently trying to update them due to a release that was made by the team member in charge of the Play Store account. The new Play Store release targets a newer Android version than the present F-Droid release, but is based on an older branch. Currently, F-Droid is in limbo, because it needs to be updated to comply with newer Play Store requirements, but to do so would break Termux as we know it. The Play Store build attempts to mitigate that.

All of this is in the linked thread but I just woke up from a nap and am feeling generous.

sabreW4K3,

You’d be surprised at how many FOSS developers treat F-Droid as a second class citizen. I uninstalled Element because they kept pushing updates to the Play Store that weren’t available on F-Droid.

sabreW4K3,

Not sure I consider this futurology, but I definitely consider people that willingly use Adobe products silly.

sabreW4K3,

Yes, though for certain things, Adobe products are the industry standard and there’s no way to escape that. For others, it just requires learning new apps. There was a great discussion about GIMP the other day for example.

sabreW4K3,

I started using GIMP just before Adobe Creative Cloud came to fruition, so I’m biased. I found things frustrating and hard at first, but I switched to Linux and had no choice but to learn. I don’t doubt that it could be better in many ways, but most criticisms I read about GIMP are that it doesn’t do things the way Adobe Photoshop does.

sabreW4K3,

This. Plus the community is top notch. Such helpful people.

sabreW4K3,

I tried it out and you can’t share to it. Fail!

Summary from Gemini Summary from Gemini

The video is about the new features of Android 15, also known as Android 15 Vanilla Ice-cream. Here is a summary of the video:

Design and Customization:

  • The Android logo is now a triangular shape with a small spaceship in the middle.
  • You can save app pairs in split-screen mode.
  • The volume panel has a new design with thicker pill-shaped sliders and lets you access extra features like audio picker and live caption.
  • Pixel launcher got improvements in the widgets panel. You can now get more recommendations and the ability to add widgets with a single tap.

Functionality:

  • Private space: This feature allows you to download new apps and save files that are separate from your main storage. You can access it with a passcode or Biometrics.
  • Archive apps: You can now archive apps to free up space while still keeping parts of the app so that you can reinstall it faster in the future.
  • Satellite messaging: This feature is available for T-Mobile users for now. It allows you to text anyone including emergency services even in remote areas.
  • Bluetooth will automatically turn on again the very next day if you turn it off. This is because of the new Find My Device Network that uses Bluetooth to help locate lost devices.
  • You can now use your Android device as a webcam with high-quality mode.
  • You can set a default wallet app other than Google Wallet.
  • Improved lock screen options on Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet.
  • You can now check the health of your storage chip on Pixel devices.
  • More control over what happens when you fold or unfold the Pixel Fold device.
  • Predictive back gestures: When you swipe to go back, you will see a sneak peek of the previous page.

Other Features:

  • Improved desktop mode with features like split-screen and freeform windows.
  • New keyboard features including preview, sticky keys, slow keys, and bounce keys.
  • New screen saver that lets you control all of your Smart Home Products.
  • Color contrast option to adjust the contrast of the text, buttons, and icons.
  • Audio sharing: This feature lets others listen to the same music that you’re listening to on their headphones.
  • Adaptive timeout: This feature automatically turns off your screen a bit earlier than what you set it to if it finds out that you’re not using your device.
  • App quarantine: This feature lets you quarantine apps so that they won’t be able to show notifications or run in the background.
  • Option to disable limiting the default frame rate for games.
sabreW4K3,

Mr Lee is underestimating capitalism massively.

What we’ll see is more and more jobs doing absolutely nothing in real terms, so tonnes of middle management jobs created. All while we continue to not have enough teachers, doctors and nurses as we as a society insist on under paying them, so we’ll see those numbers dwindle.

Robotics and machine learning will continue to gobble up jobs and the companies that transition the quickest will leave the rest behind. There will be a few major fuck ups, but it’s all apart of the learning process.

Within five years, we’ll start to see jobs overseeing AI, imagine the staff in the supermarket watching self service tills and that will be the final nail in the coffin, but society will never admit it, because there’s far more profit in propping up the existing system than transitioning to a post wealth society where things working well is more important than people accumulating money.

sabreW4K3,

Once again I look at Sundar Pichai and ask, what is the point of you? Under his stewardship, Android has lost all signs of life. The Android community is dead. There’s been no innovation and the little bits of innovation they had created in recent years were quickly sunset. The last selling point of a Pixel was the quick updates and long update life but now everyone offers seven years. No identity, no community, no selling point, just blandness! They don’t even leverage their money to offer cheaper hardware, the Pixel Tablet with Dock is compelling in its form factor, but upon closer look, it’s less than mid-range specs, sub-par speaker performance and all with an over inflated price. At least eat the cost so that you can get one or two of these in every home. The only thing that’s impressed me in recent years is bundling the watches.

sabreW4K3,

I really need to install Graphene and have a proper play with it.

sabreW4K3,

Samsung committed to seven years before Google and look at the length of support Apple were offering. Maybe we have different definitions of innovation.

sabreW4K3,

It’s a shame. I remember the Google+ days when they were playing with app redesigns. Those days were fun.

sabreW4K3,

Sorry, I remembered incorrectly and thus my information was wrong. They offered four years back when Google was only offering two

sammobile.com/…/galaxy-phone-seven-years-security…

sabreW4K3,

Are they really telling us that what they’re adding is launcher enhancements?

You know what’s sad, Mishaal has done a better job speaking up Android 15 than Google.

And holy fuck, I’m tired of this bullshit about mature systems. They could bring back Jedi hand gestures, they could improve bubbles, they could fix notifications so the new one is easier to find, because holy fuck how often do I look at my phone and can’t find the new notification. They could link Monet on phone and watch. They could enable me to start something on one phone and send to another and not via their shitty nearby send.

There’s a tonne of room for improvement and they advertise locked apps and making search results even harder to get to.

sabreW4K3,

Jeff, you’re alive! Welcome back!

sabreW4K3,

Mishaal Rahman is the hardest working person in Android. I wish him all the success and recognition he should get.

sabreW4K3,

Curious as to why the person that downvoted this, did so?

sabreW4K3,

It’s disappointing that politics and xenophobia are even a factor in such discussions. As a society, we were always going to make humanoid robots, the question was if we would be ready for them by the time they arrive? Unfortunately, I don’t think we are ready and we’ll likely use them for profit. But that doesn’t take away from the benefits that they can provide. If we can have these assist the sick and elderly, that would be wonderful for society. I just don’t see the downside of this article being posted, at the very least it opens up the floor to discussion.

sabreW4K3,

We’ve seen a few robot restaurants open in the past few years. I wonder how they’re getting on. I remember at least one was a failure because it needed humans to supervise everything.

sabreW4K3,

People fear what they don’t know?

sabreW4K3,

Germany is a religious state?

sabreW4K3,

Interesting. Thank you for taking the time to explain.

sabreW4K3,

I’m definitely in support of robots getting mandatory breaks and downtime. Just didn’t understand why Sunday was compulsory. Thanks for explaining.

sabreW4K3,

The dock is the thing that makes it worth even considering. What they needed to do was improve the speaker and lower the price given they’re charging premium prices for mid-range specs.

sabreW4K3,

I used this randomly earlier and my friend hated it.

sabreW4K3,

They so need to add this for updates too

sabreW4K3,

Sadly not. I’m forever watching apps download updates in single file

sabreW4K3,

This is the most basic of basic of features

sabreW4K3,

There was a previous discussion about it here, for anyone interested
