The real problem with both parties so far is that nobody is talking about local government, which does the bulk of work in this country

Education, social care, health, public transport, housing, libraries, etc

It’s all well and good saying that the NHS will get money, but it means shit if local government doesn’t get the money to do social care

Especially when the Government’s budget always treats local government spending as something to easily dispose of

Will Labour do something about it? I sure hope they will, because pretty much everything they’ve pledged in the manifesto requires a massive amount of support from cities and counties, and they’re not going to be able to do much if they don’t have the money. In fact, some, like fixing potholes are solely the purview of local government.

Labour said the age of austerity is over, but it remains to be seen if they’ll end the austerity in local government too
