i like void but dealing with upstream can be a bit :blobcatgrimacing:

flatpak is nice for getting around that, but then you're dealing with redhat. :blobcatconfounded:

RH is good, but flatpak sucks

icedquinn,

@mischievoustomato this is transposed. red hat sucks but flatpak is a good idea.

@mischievoustomato the priorities seem a bit scrumbled because they're trying to hook it in to the whole wayland/pipeware thing which in turn is there to cram gnome, but like

Elementary i think rebuilt their app store on flatpak now. They just manage the hub a little more intently. :comfyshrug:

@icedquinn @mischievoustomato i look if something exists in nixpkgs then look for docker. It couldn't be more hassle free but comes at the cost of storage.

@GNUxeava @mischievoustomato i think this is more of a lack of coordination issue. docker can absolutely waste as much space as flatpak but people do a slightly better job reusing base images.

GNUxeava,
@GNUxeava@mk.absturztau.be avatar

@icedquinn @mischievoustomato i use docker for very specific things to keep size at a minimum

icedquinn,
@icedquinn@blob.cat avatar

@GNUxeava @mischievoustomato sure, i also used to make my own docker images.

it's just that flatpak base images and docker base images are the same thing. :ablobcatpopcorn:

@icedquinn @mischievoustomato wha
what
why
why iss flatpak so bad at it

icedquinn,
@icedquinn@blob.cat avatar

@GNUxeava @mischievoustomato it isn't. people go use what base image was there at the time, build their Flatpak, and publish it on flathub. The common base image is a snapshot of Fedora. Fedora gets tumbled every six months.

The problem is using a semi rolling release as a base image and then only rebuilding the packages on a new release of the software (if they even update the sdk.)

You can entirely botch the job like this with docker and in the same way.

argh
i wont use flatpak anyway for a good while. I prefer native packages

icedquinn,
@icedquinn@blob.cat avatar

@mischievoustomato @GNUxeava understandable. I like to check in sometimes because it's the most viable desktop app container right now :blobcatowoeyes:
