Now, not all my favorite girls are the ones I find the hottest, but surely a certain standard of deliciousness has to be met to be deserving of being named Best Girl - and a surprising number of the top 16 Seeds aren't even close to reaching it.

First of all, Lain isn't unattractive, however she lacks sex appeal. This is because she's a child and adding sex appeal to her would ruin the show. So yes, it is in fact a posative because her being sexy would be negative. Sexiness (in normal people) suggests maturity which is simply not a part of her character, but that doesn't mean she's unattractive. More importantly I think people should consider characters for more than their sex appeal, and every single post shilling Tatsumaki has been appealing to her sexiness. And so I really do believe everyone voting for her is just doing so because they fap to her. It's a shameful admission of near non involvement with the stories you consume if that's your only talking point in support of a character is her design. I've long been against waifuists, memers, and others who turn characters into dress up dolls for their fantasies. People who are unable to grasp character in a character popularity contest drag the whole thing down. It's an unavoidable tide, but I'll continue paddling against it.

An anime or vidya girl having good lewds is a positive, nobody should try pretending it isn't, since it's a byproduct of great design, massive popularity etc. This is in large part a beauty contest, and if a girl can't compete on beauty you have to compensate with the likes of Memes, effortpoasts etc. Megumin almost certainly got more Coomer votes than Osaka, but Osaka won due to memes, likability and people rooting for an epic upset.
