Shouldn't the government protect fresh water supplies from companies dumping pollutants in them like what has happened in the US? Don't know if the American system is something to emulate
The US actually has fairly strong environmental regulations, like you can't legally import one of picrelated 6hp low speed farm diesel engine.
And because of it, a lot of companies prefer to locate their manufacturing in Mexico, China, or India
And even so, you still have accidents like the East Palestine Ohio train derailment.
And the big corporations that ARE operating in the US are violating environmental regulation all the time, they just pay the inspectors to look the other way.
And if you've got an honest inspector who refuses to play along, they just go to the union and tell them this big fine is going to mean they need to lay off X number of employees, and the union goes down to city hall and does some Goodfellas shit and that inspector gets reassigned elsewhere.
The only real effect of this regulation is you have no small businesses in that space, because they can't do #4 so they're unable to compete.
They may have regulations but don't enforce them with prison sentences for crimes against the American people like with the opiate crisis and polluting the fresh water. The FDA is owned by big pharma and chemical companies etc
The FDA is a prefect example of the kind of regulatory structure which causes more harm than good, and should be eliminated. They preside over some of the worst food and healthcare in the world and are politically unable to bring any kind of control over Big Food and Big Pharma, yet they enthusiastically enforce trivial regulations against small farmers and restauranteurs.
They've also effectively prohibited doctors from recommending non-pharmaceutical treatments. If a substance is not fda approved for some use, even if the script is cut for off label, it's pretty much a no go.
Many substances can't be patented, and therefore, will never be fda approved, because there's no incentive to pay for trails when anyone can sell it.
The FDA, EPA, etc. would be great if it weren't for the big businesses they're supposed to be protecting us from buying them off.
Europe has higher standards for food and drugs than the USA does. They don't allow as much garbage in their food and don't allow ads for prescription drugs on television for instance ("ask your doctor if this is right for you").
It isn't the agencies themselves that are the problem. It is the evil scumbags who are paying them off and the people who are accepting the bribes that are the problems.
