They're little bean shaped carbuncles near the surface of the fruit, in the pinecone scale-looking bits. If you look hard you can still find them, they're vestigial. I think the evolutionary pathways is that monkeys would grab the whole pineapple, carry it away then bite off and spit out the seeds to get to the fruit
