Trying meshuggah, can't say I'm a fan tbh

aeris,

@RustyCrab Meshuggah mentioned
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3JNm48a6u0
I really like their music

@aeris that's better than the other results I was getting for them

@deprecated_ii I was recommended them because I like periphery a lot but to me they just sound like <insert generic metal playing out of a headbanger car here>

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@deprecated_ii oh damn they're actually really fuckin old. Maybe that's why.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@deprecated_ii started on a quest to look for more doom-like music and there doesn't seem to be a hell of a lot of it out there.

@RustyCrab makes me think of Deftones (Around the Fur specifically) and Primus to some degree

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@deprecated_ii the style I'm fond of seems to be heavily palm muted metal (meaning a lot of notes have a hard cutoff rather than smooth falloff like most guitar playing) known as djent. Apparently it's "not a genre" but it sure as hell sounds like one to me

Barbecued_Lemons,
@Barbecued_Lemons@poa.st avatar

@RustyCrab @deprecated_ii the reason its not a genre is because it's a style of playing, another example would be tremolo picking

@deprecated_ii that's a unique one

@RustyCrab one of the few primus songs I really like

I like les claypool's style but the songs they put together don't really click with me generally

Chzikken_1486,
@Chzikken_1486@poa.st avatar

@deprecated_ii @RustyCrab I met him after a Rush concert by accident (Primus opened for them).

Talk about a cool down-to-earth guy.

Agree on the music

@deprecated_ii @sneeden @aeris @Barbecued_Lemons @Chzikken_1486 @Ripsnort I have heard that word but I do not understand it well enough to use it without looking like an ass

@deprecated_ii @RustyCrab One of the saddest things in music has been watching Primus slowly devolve from genre-defining madness to generic stoner rock slop

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@deprecated_ii yeah I can hear it

@RustyCrab @deprecated_ii Which album were you listening to? Imo they didn't really solidify their djent sound until Nothing (2002). They've been around since like the mid 80s I think.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@Ripsnort @deprecated_ii yeah I don't really know. I was just clicking around random top rated ones. I'll try that one.

Ripsnort,
@Ripsnort@poa.st avatar

@RustyCrab @deprecated_ii Nothing and Obzen are usually considered their best albums. Check out Rational Gaze, that was the first song of theirs I heard while watching headbanger's ball. Fucking great music video too.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@Ripsnort @deprecated_ii one barrier for me is I love the instrumentals but man I'm really not a fan of the vocals of this genre. That's mostly the thing that kept me away from metal my whole life.

Ripsnort,
@Ripsnort@poa.st avatar

@RustyCrab @deprecated_ii Yeah, it's more about aggression then melody or vocal range. That's what usually puts off my friends whom I try to introduce to metal.
