okay so while my gaming desktop has pretty good built in audio, my laptop that I use to watch movies on DOES NOT and in fact sounds horrific. So I guess I'm looking for a cheap DAC/amp for that. I looked at "mid range" ones and they're like $3,000.

@RustyCrab depends on what country you're in
If us, you can get a schiit magni and an apple USB c dongle for 100 bucks
The euro apple dongle is lower voltage and garbage
Idk what the best value amps in Europe are

newt,
@newt@stereophonic.space avatar

@RustyCrab that's audiophile midrange, which isn't in any way better. You can get a good desktop DAC/headphone amp for like 100-150. Most that I saw worked in L'Eunuchs just fine.

Just avoid anything from big brands like Creative. They often require custom Windows software for configuration.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@newt yeah that's bare minimum requirement is that I need to be able to plug and play. I am 200% done with bullshit control centers that NEVER EVER work

@newt@stereophonic.space avatar

@RustyCrab i've been rocking this baby for the past 6 months or so. No complaints other than the lack of balanced output. Drives my 250Ohm cans just fine. Also, the meme lightbulbs glow in the dark which is cool!

@newt after WAY too much research for one day I've decided to go with the schiit modius and midgard

@newt @RustyCrab I recently bought some 250Ohms headphones that somehow work everywhere I plug them in (even on my phone), but before that odd surprise I was looking for amps in case they didn't work and I found:

Which seem cheap and fairly decent.

splitshockvirus,
@splitshockvirus@mstdn.starnix.network avatar

@RustyCrab Get a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 or Solo

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@splitshockvirus looks reasonable but:

  • do you own one?
  • did you get it to work on linux without any additional drivers or weird ports? (eg: can I plug it into a usb port and have it just work)
RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@splitshockvirus I found an in depth review for the generation 3. I don't quite understand what the gripe is with the headphones bit. Just not enough volume? They're up to gen 4 now so maybe that problem is fixed but I am not finding similar reviews for that version. Currently looking through the thread to see if they say anything about it. https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/focusrite-scarlett-2i2-audio-interface-gen-3-review.10187/

splitshockvirus,
@splitshockvirus@mstdn.starnix.network avatar

@RustyCrab I have a Gen 2. I find the volume loud enough for basically anything I'd need it for, I'm driving Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X which are 48 Ohm so they are plenty loud, I wouldn't go higher than 250-300 ohms with your cans.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@splitshockvirus mine are 300 ohms apparently. Ngl I do not know what that actually means

splitshockvirus,
@splitshockvirus@mstdn.starnix.network avatar

@RustyCrab Higher Ohms higher resistance, the power you will need to get those to get to volume.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@splitshockvirus right so... It kind of sounds like this might not be the right DAC to hook it up to. I'll check the gen 4 stuff in a bit to see how it is. Evidently the 4i4 is much higher but that's on preorder right now

splitshockvirus,
@splitshockvirus@mstdn.starnix.network avatar

@RustyCrab

Word of warning stay away from anything that needs their mixer software. I have the 6i6 also and it's basically a paper weight because it was required and is not linux supported. I haven't looked at if the 4i4 needs it.

You'll need something with an Amp if you want to drive the headphones clearly.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@splitshockvirus I was afraid of that. Into the void I go

splitshockvirus,
@splitshockvirus@mstdn.starnix.network avatar
RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@splitshockvirus so without reading anything about this... I would just get a 2i2, feed that into the amp and then plug the headphones into the amp?

splitshockvirus,
@splitshockvirus@mstdn.starnix.network avatar

@RustyCrab

Yes you take LINE OUT and plug it into your amp, and then amp into phones.

Audio interfaces turn digital signal into electrical signal for your driver (phones), amps increase amplitude of those electrical signals.

DACs and Interfaces can have amps internally but dedicated amps have more power.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@splitshockvirus

You take that DAC

Plug it in USB set it out for a while

You take that AMP

Set it down on the desk where the DAC used to be

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@splitshockvirus after reading some reviews of both I think I may go with the midgard instead of the vali.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@splitshockvirus I do have concerns about the scarlett 2i2 because apparently its drivers are unstable and shitty on windows. That is a concern for me. The modius purports to be plug and play on windows 10 and up.

splitshockvirus,
@splitshockvirus@mstdn.starnix.network avatar

@RustyCrab Can confirm they are shitty on windows. But on Mac and Linux they work fine.

@RustyCrab Mid range 3000$? That more than mid range lol, 140$ is more like mid range.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@dcc much like the the keyboard world, the definition of 'mid' is going to vary wildly depending on who you talk to. That's just what popped up when I started searching. If you're dealing with suspiciously rich audiopholes $3,000 probably is "mid"

Tsuki,
@Tsuki@amami.paradigm-x.tokyo avatar

I was looking for one of these too but I was not given the audiophile autism so I have no idea what I'm looking for.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@Tsuki it seems like it's going to be a rabbit hole no matter what I do. I already went down that road with keyboards and I am not looking forward to doing that again.

I FOUND MY ENDGAME KEYBOARD BY THE WAY AND I HAVENT TOUCHED ANY OTHERS SINCE. THEY SAID IT COULDN'T BE DONE

Natanahel,

@RustyCrab if its a laptop you should just use wired headphoned, you are not getting far away from it to watch movies, right?

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@Natanahel The dac built into the laptop is horrible and the sound is muffled and staticy. This is a fairly cheap laptop so this was to be somewhat expected. The headphones sound great on everything else.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@Natanahel not sure if you're familiar with how dac/amps work exactly but basically I am plugging the wired headphones directly into the laptop and the results are quite bad.

Natanahel,

@RustyCrab maybe an adapter like this could be useful? I have one and it seemed to work better than the built in audio jack. Otherwise it would have to be a complete external dac

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@Natanahel also did you have to install a driver for that? what operating system?

Natanahel,

@RustyCrab I used it for my raspberry pi 400 that didn't have an audio jack. I didn't need to install any drivers.
