@deprecated_ii how are they computing that cost? I buy 1/3th as much gas using a hybrid vs my old car.

@RustyCrab presumably it's a total cost thing including purchase price and maintenance

but their math is retarded, it doesn't cost $3 to drive a mile. maybe $0.30

@RustyCrab looking at the article the math is so obviously wrong it makes me think it was AI generated

@deprecated_ii that is a distinct possibility in the current year of our lord

@deprecated_ii @RustyCrab Wear and tear and maintenance are surprisingly high especially if you pay dealership prices. You can look at consumer reports or AAA for their cost of ownership for X years, which assumes average mileage of 10-12k and divide from there. The first 36k miles or so, when basically everything is under warranty, there's almost no maintenance outside of oil changes, but it gets worse over time...

deprecated_ii,
@deprecated_ii@poa.st avatar

@BowsacNoodle @RustyCrab still nowhere near $3 a mile

a $30k car that's a total lemon and needs a ton of maintenance and gets 25 mpg doesn't even crack $1 a mile

Isn't $3/mile standard write-off cost for taxes?

The thing that makes electric cars so expensive is the battery replacement every dozen years or so.
I literally can't use one regardless because I make somewhat regular driving trips in excess of 1000 miles.

@deprecated_ii @RustyCrab I can't vouch for the maths in this article but usually these estimates are usually done based on the total cost of the first five years of ownership.

Studies I have seen done in Australia find the break even point for getting an EV over ICE is when petrol hits $3.5/L AUD (~10.5 USD a gallon)
