You can easily identify people who aren't grifters because they just start building systems. Maybe because of their day job they lack the money or time to build the systems as quickly or as effectively as they would like, but they are going to keep building regardless.

Some of these builders succeed in making something small but effective -- this the point when the rest of us get to step up and kick in a few bucks to help the process along. However, it's in everyone's interest for the original builder to remain the Benevolent Dictator for Life for the project -- no "committees", "stakeholders", "non-profit board members", "vulture capitalists" or other AIDS.

I do recommend that successful builders eventually find an apprentice who shares their passion for the project and who can demonstrate the necessary competence to continue it into the far future. The Rule of Two, so to speak.
