@drewdevault I cant tell you how many times people released their innovated idea under a copy-left license only to be angered when they realized the consequences, the vital nature, and the lock-in that resulted. Many abandoned the project and had to start over...

To each their own, but I will never use a copyleft license again.

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@drewdevault No, I didnt say anything about proprietary software. And it allows for that just fine.

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@drewdevault

I assume you mean "virality".. and no, it prevents quite a bit else.. for example it prevents switching or in some cases even using other copy-left licenses. It is also well known for not working well along side other open-source licenses in general.

There have been countless open-source projects that had to be abandoned and restarted from scratch due to the virality of a copyleft license that prevented progress regarding open-source interests due to licensing conflicts.

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@drewdevault

X.org server I think was the one that had to be abandoned, or was it XFree86.. one of the major X11 implementations had to be completely abandoned and rewritten as whatever replaced it.

This cant be said enough... When i had a doctor come to my door asking if i had any masks to donate I had some choice words for that schmuck.

@realcaseyrollins

Ya know I never considered banning health insurance... and I was about to say that sounds idiotic... but as I try to type it i just keep going "he aint wrong".. if everyone had to pay cash people would be pissed as fuck at the rip off prices and might actually demand some change.

The problem is people dont know how to fix problems. So while they would demand change that demand would be "make it free for everyone!" and then we are right back at having insurance again.

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@realcaseyrollins

The issue with supply-demand market mentality in healthcare is that the supply in limited and demand is infinite. You can always pay more to live longer, with diminishing returns, and most people will give everything they own to live just one more peaceful day.

You simply cant use supply and demand in that sort of dynamic without reaching extortion level prices quicky, as we have already seen.

@realcaseyrollins

Even so, a rich person will spend a lot of money getting exorbanant care for a broken bone if they are scared of long-term function. People can be quite irrational about their health.

@icedquinn

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@realcaseyrollins

its not about how much they will spend, its about the fact that any person of any amount of money will spend all their disposable income and much of their indisposable income to get it.

A rich person wouldnt spend their last 500K on a car if it meant they were homeless. They would spend that on a treatment if they knew it would bive them a happier and or longer life.

@icedquinn

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@realcaseyrollins

No thats my point... most people dont have it, yet spend it anyway, thats the point.

@icedquinn

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@realcaseyrollins

> How can people spend what they don't have?

Debt. You go in, get treated, get a bill, dont have the money to pay, you just spent money you dont have. Its very common.

@icedquinn

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@realcaseyrollins

Its not even a loan, you dont even know what your spending till you walk out most of the time.

Many years ago i had asthema, fairly severe. My insurance had lapsed and I spent a day or two in the hospital. Cost me almost 100K by the time I left, didnt have a penny to my name.

@freemo is the gradle template completely broken for you too?

https://docs.gradle.org/current/userguide/building_java_projects.html

freemo,

@icedquinn I actually havent worked with gradle in a few years. I usually use maven myself. Whats broken, I can try to help.

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@icedquinn Hold on, those errors mean nothing to me if i dont know what you did from the docs that got you those errors... like whats the exact command your running and what does your gradle file look like?

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@icedquinn I assume you mean the template in the intro (there is more than one)... ok let me try here locally.

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@icedquinn

So i jsut tried it, changed nothing, not even the quotes, and it worked fine for me. try the groovy version not the kotlin one thts the standard way

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@icedquinn

Cant help with that, if i try running kotlin i get totally different errors, so clearly kotlin isnt ready for prime time.

Interesting fact of the day: A gravitational wave, having energy, also generates its own gravitational field in addition to itself. Though this field is insanely weak.

Note this is not the same as saying a gravitational field has its own gravitational field. It is only the wave that has energy, and thus its own field. A gravitational wave only occurs when an object with a gravitational field accelerates (and orbiting another object counts as acceleration).

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@icedquinn

Well its a hard thing to test experimentally.

But the reason here is just energy, gravitational waves have energy, so they must have their own gravitational field.

You know what confuses me?

A dispatcher can send cops to the wrong house, they go in and kill the residents who were defending themselves, and it's the cops who are prosecuted and not the dispatcher.

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@realcaseyrollins Why would the dispatcher be prosecuted? Its the cops that decided to open fire on someone who was innocent, which is the criminal offense. It is not a criminal offense to misspeak an address.

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@Murray_N

I dont exactly disagree...

My issue isnt with no knock warrants directly (surely im against them in general) bur rather that cops have qualified immunity and can carry them out, along with some murder, and not get a murder charge.

Take away qualified immunity, everything else fixes itself.

@realcaseyrollins

freemo,

We worry about providing Universal Basic Income because people might stop working, but here's a thought: maybe, just maybe, with a little financial security, people might actually pursue work they truly choose rather than work to just not die. Imagine that world for a moment.

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@scottsantens

As someone who is strongly against UBI, and strongly supportive of welfare I can earnestly say people simply not working is not at all the reason I (or most people against UBI in my opinion) are against it.

The reason i am against it is because it causes people more harm than good. People who are in a position where they need assistance need to be given the tools to get out of their situation, and the help to get there needs to be conditional on this (and we should be spending the money that goes with that). Financial assistance should be conditional with mandatory job training or mental health therapy needed to help someone succeed, not just money.

In fact when there are underlying bad habits, as can often be the case, it is possible money can even make a persons condition worse and cause them to sleep farther into poverty.

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@icedquinn

Absolutely. There is no doubt that actually providing real assistance is a more nuanced and complex thing to do than just piling a bunch of paper bills on someone.

But something that is simple, that doesnt fix the problem (and in fact makes it worse) is not a good argument for the simpler approach. Solving problems for real takes more effort and nuance, but since it actually stands a chance of solving problems (and hopefully with improvement more so over time) its still the way to go.

This is a big problem with society in almost everything, they deny things simply due to complexity in excahange for something simple that isnt a solution at all.

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@icedquinn

> i think the typical objection to ubi is just a trauma response. "i had to scrape salt off the roads for six cents a day so you should too!!"

There could a bit of people who think that.. i mean there are plenty of grump old crumudgeons.

But of all the people I've debated UBI with, the ones that were against UBI were largely against it for the reasons I've stated, that it enables bad habits rather than fixing them. Not saying poor people are drug addicts, but its a similar mentality, you give a drug addict cash all you do is enable their bad habit, you pay for their rehab you might actually fix their problem. Most poor people in my experience were never taught the skills they need to get out of poverty. With the right skills its easy (I've done it for myself and many other people), but obtaining those skills are non-trivial. Worse yet most poor people are taught its not the skills that is the problem but the system is just against them, so quite often they will push back on the very things they need to do to fix the problem.

In short, more money tends to make poor people just reinforce their bad habits and makes things worse not better most of the time.

I know I'm doing something right when virtually every single MAGA supporter and extreme leftie hates you and thinks you are the other side of the two.

The day democrats or Republicans start thinking I make sense is the day I need to seriously rethinking my opinions.

Was the racial purge the orange guy who has a history of disliking brown people? Or the senile guy who literally spent a decade of his career trying to fight to keep segregation alive because he didnt want his white child to go to school with other minorities in a "racial jungle" (his words)?

Like literally, im not trying to be a smart ass, when people refer to "The racist guy" that literally doesn't even begin to narrow it down out of those two.

@lowqualityfacts

freemo,
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

@LouisIngenthron

I mean sure, except both are clearly racist today.. one just knows the racism gets him in trouble so he hides it and moved to exploitation over oppression. But their racism still shows through often enough to know its a manipulation and not a lack of racism.

The other guy is and always has been a moron so he just doesnt really hide it.

@davidhmccoy @lowqualityfacts

I am truly amazed at the number of applicants I have seen off of this single post. And almost all are well suited candidates worth my time to review. I am astonished that a single post on the fedi is more effective than actually hiring a recruiter. Thank you everyone for the boosts and applications.

While many applicants have made it through and are currently being hired because we have so many positions we have quite a few still available for every level from sr to jr, and both data scientists and programmers. So please keep boosting, sharing, and applying if anyone is interested.

Just a reminder this is 100% remote, no fixed hours, will pay market rates for position. I will be your direct boss and hiring manager (also owner, founder, and inventor of the tech).

Yea I can see that actually, not that I would ban the show and stop my kids from watching it. I think a common theme was kids disobeying their parents, but they usually got caught, got in trouble, and learned the error of their ways.
