Notes on the "tiktok ban" that is to my knowledge only so far passed by the house. It is designed to pressure ByteDance (Chinese parent company) to sell tiktok which is based out of Los Angeles and Singapore. Actual text of the law:
it shall be unlawful for an entity to distribute, maintain, or update (or enable the distribution, maintenance, or updating of) a foreign adversary controlled application.
YT shorts was made to compete with Tiktok pretty much. It starts so many dumb trends and "challenges" many of which can injure people, the rest of it is brainrot and the only good thing to come out of it is cat memes IMO (although I never directly use Tiktok)
Whats a recommended program for manipulating PDFs that isn't adobe? I have to scan in a huge stack of papers double sided and each set of sides is going to come out as one PDF (there is nothing I can do about this) so I need to be able to take the two PDFs and interleave them
I fucking hate pdf format if I am being honest, it's not built for easy editing which is why you get shit like adobe acrobat trying to get you to pay them for their crappy product
As much as illustrators are crying over AI, I can't even imagine what's going through the mind of musicians right now. AI music is on its first iteration and it's already BTFOing the current iteration of AI art. It probably doesn't help that music is fundamentally formulaic.
And there's also model poisoning where eventually the AI models will start "learning" from the output of other AI models generally decreasing the quality and creativity of the output
Recently one of our users was contacted by federal agents for making a retarded fedpost (he was joking). As of right now, I haven't been contacted by any federal agents, nor has my server-provider contacted me (I haven't been contacted by anyone except the user in question over this). His information was likely retrieved via the number plate on his beloved car he posted pictures of.
I don't have any reason to believe that the server has been compromised right now and nothing in the logs indicates this. That being said, I implore everyone to exercise vigilance regarding their OpSec. Don't sign up to any fedi instance with a personally identifying email. Most importantly of all - don't post something that identifies yourself in any way. Don't post anything in DMs that identifies yourself in any way.
I can hear the "literally 1984"s already, but reminder that the rules of this server include not breaking any US laws and threatening to kill the president of the United States is considered a felony. This is something they actively monitor for, as we have seen.
