Is this the death of their compact flagship ??..Shame if is…

Welp_im_damned,

I mean there is the base s23, and sony xperia 5 series still.

@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

does Samsung still try to keep people from flashing custom ROMs? Reason im on a Pixel 5 is the size and because I can run LineageOS.

Welp_im_damned,

yes they still do.

Sony will at least give you the ability to flash your own rom. (Not in the u.s. because of our carrier bs)

independantiste,
@independantiste@sh.itjust.works avatar

Pixel 8 is about the same size as the pixel 5 and S23/24 if flashing custom ROMs is important to you

infinitevalence,
@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

did not realize they made it taller but not wider, it would still be a problem for my tiny Trump hands to reach the top left when holding in my right hand, but it at least offers me a modern option.

independantiste,
@independantiste@sh.itjust.works avatar

Android has an option where you swipe down on the navigation bar, and it brings the display down to the bottom half, idk if it’s enabled by default though, but it’s very useful. iPhones have the same thing as well

These are the issues because I one handed swipe and navigate. But yes that is helpful.

fisco,
@fisco@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes the base S23/24, are still considered compact by today’s standards, but the Xperia 5 series is pushing that a bit…🤷🏻‍♂️

Blaze,

Indeed, Relevant list: notebookcheck.net/The-Best-Compact-Smartphones.16…

I got a 30 Fusion recently, quite happy with it.

Welp_im_damned,

Thats nice.

Ilandar,

Neither of those phones are actually flagships. Like I get that some people just use that word to mean any phone with an 8 series Snapdragon but that’s not actually what it means. The Galaxy Ultra and the Xperia 1 are the flagship phones for those manufacturers.

Xylight,
@Xylight@lemdro.id avatar

this is the “ultra”, hopefully not

machinaeZER0,

I’m hoping that too, but seems strange they’d choose to stagger the launches if so :(

Ilandar,

But that potentially implies that the regular Zenfone will no longer be a flagship, in the same way the regular Galaxy or Pixel phones are not the flagships for their respective manufacturers.

floridaman, to android in is there a way to track my location?

If you want a real fully featured solution, the Home Assistant companion is capable of location tracking and I believe you can send events that push an update, although it may not be accurate. There is also Locate My Device which I’m pretty sure is FOSS and works over SMS, a much lighter solution for your problem but not as convenient with like a Web UI and some such.

Sylence, to android in [General question to the Android community] Have you given up on the audio jack, or do you still only buy devices that have it?
@Sylence@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I exclusively use phones with a 3.5mm jack. Currently on a Sony Xperia 1 IV. That said, I also use bluetooth IEMs sometimes and I like having the option of switching between wired/wireless when convenient.

HorreC, to android in [General question to the Android community] Have you given up on the audio jack, or do you still only buy devices that have it?
@HorreC@kbin.social avatar

I just add a usbc to audio/charging dongle to them. Getting a phone with a audio jack I feel like is when I wanted to keep the hardware keyboard, I was just walking the boulder up the hill I just was like there was an easy off that mountain.

Kelo,
@Kelo@lemmy.world avatar

For me the usb c to audio Jack adapters were a letdown. From the three I bought - all of them had a constant static noise. Especially hearable on lower noises. Don’t know if it was just the adapters I got, or if it was just a quirk my phone had, but I’ll stick with the dedicated usb jack for now.

slurp,

I had that only when they got damaged, but they easily get damaged

HorreC,
@HorreC@kbin.social avatar

To be honest I would have thought I would have got the same, I got some random one and its worked good for over two years now. I only use it for audio books so maybe I am missing out on some fucked up things in the connection.

dingus,

I bought one off the shelf at like Target or something before I got my first pair of Bluetooth headphones. The adapter is trash. Static noise like you said and when slightly kinked it just stops working. It’s not like I used it forever just fine before it started doing all this…it was trash to begin with. Apparently a lot of these adapters are just known to suck.

danhakimi, to android in Is RCS an open standard?

It's kind of open. It's pretty much open for carriers to implement on the server side, and for OEMs to develop on the client side. There is an open source client in AOSP's RCS Test App, but for one reason or another, as far as I know nobody's attempted to implement it in an actual usable client app. I don't believe there's a server reference implementation. And, in the US, all the carriers' RCS services are run exclusively by Google, so there's no real point in attempting to set up your own server. Apple might be able to navigate the politics with carriers and with Google to make something work, if it wants to, but it's really not a standard for us to play with.

Use Matrix Instead.

d3Xt3r, (edited ) to android in [Discussion] Which phones are you excited for in 2024?

None. Except maybe foldables, all other phones have become boring - it’s basically the same formula every year: incremental spec update + some feature removal no one asked for + some gimmick no one asked for either (“AI” anyone?).

Blaze,
@Blaze@discuss.online avatar

Thank you for your answer. What is your current phone, are you happy with it?

d3Xt3r, (edited )

Currently using the Fold 5, upgraded from the Fold 4. Before you ask, no I’m not rich, I got it for free thanks to my company. The Fold has its pros and cons. For the pros, I’m a heavy book/manga reader, so it’s super convenient having the large screen. Or even for browsing websites, or ssh/remote access, or just Lemmy - or heck, even when typing and editing this reply - it’s a far better experience than a small screen, a huge quality of life improvement. So in that regard I’m happy, and wouldn’t go back to a normal phone.

The thing I’m ambivalent about it is the bloatware. But it wasn’t really a problem, nothing Universal Android Debloater couldn’t take care of. Once debloated + with a custom launcher, you don’t even care that it’s a Samsung.

What I dislike about it mainly is the lack of dust resistance - I’ve seen people complaining about dust somehow getting under the display or inside the hinge, so I’ve been super cautious about it. Like recently when I was on a holiday and we went to this desert area where you could go sandboarding and stuff, I didn’t dare take my phone out of my pockets or even touch it, until I got back in and washed my hands, in case some sand got into the hinge or under the screen. I think that’s a bit unacceptable for a such a premium priced phone.

The second thing I dislike about it is the camera - it’s pretty average, at least for a flagship price. Not that it’s a dealbreaker for me (I mainly take photos of food lol), for the price you’re paying, Samsung could do much, much better.

The third thing I dislike is the e-fuse/KNOX. It’s incredulous that Samsung permanently voids your warranty if you unlock your bootloader, and that you permanently lose some features - which reduced the resale value of the phone. No other Android OEM goes to this extent.

Finally, the new official grip/strap case sucks - because it’s a hard plastic/rubber thing that you need to slide downwards and bend (requires two hands) you can’t simply hold the phone and slip your fingers into the strap one-handed, which makes it very inconvenient. It’s a massive step backwards in usability compare to the Fold 4 version. People have also complained about the new strap coming off easily (because it’s swappable) or even breaking and causing you to drop the phone. No idea what Samsung were thinking when they made this change. Thankfully, it looks like there are third-party cases with the same strap design as the Fold 4, but I haven’t tried them yet. I actually managed to make my old Fold 4 strap case fit my Fold 5, as a temporary measure until the thirdparty case arrives (had to order it from overseas).

rinkan, to askburggit in [Discussion] I don't think NSFW posts should be shown publicly/to logged out users

Nah, I’m of the opposite perspective on this. Keeping NSFW stuff login-gated is a slow death sentence for the site. The change to show it to everyone seems (to me) to have resulted in a slight increase in new people posting, and probably puts us above replacement level instead of below. I don’t have actual numbers to back that up though.

The only change I would make is to the initial content warning popup for logged-out users. Make it more specific to burggit, and notify people that by creating an account they can filter the more extreme content. A booru-style default filter that you can change or disable without logging in would be nice to have, but would be a much more difficult change to make. Even then, I’d only have it disable auto-expand for posts from the more extreme communities, rather than hiding them entirely.

The_Entire_Circus,

Admittedly I haven’t been on for the past two weeks when it was implemented, so it’s hard to tell whether there’s been more posts from new users resulting from the changes.* Maybe those are stats that the admins might have access to, or not at all.

*If there are, I’m curious how they’ve discovered this place.

Agreed, the booru-style filter for default view would be good if it exists in the future. I think RA2lover’s suggestions of non-auto expand and blurred thumbnails for NSFW posts would line up with your “disable auto-expand posts from more extreme communities.” Might be hard to get agreement or to draw a line in the sand and say “This is extreme and this isn’t”, so if it comes to that I’m in favor of erring on the side of caution and non-auto expanding + blurring all NSFW posts for the visitor view (since these posts aren’t gated behind logins). And tailoring the CW popup is a great idea as well, though I’m not sure whether mention should be made of the more extreme content at the pop-up or left for them to discover upon actually hitting the site.

Burger,
@Burger@burggit.moe avatar

I tried changing that popup warning at the reverse proxy level, but it just wouldn’t take. This would require me to fork the software and add changes on my end and have them publicly available on a git repository so as to remain in line with the AGPL. I’m not really good with git so I don’t know much about how to have have changes from upstream without destroying or conflicting with my own changes as the upstream software is updated.

I’d like to see the lurkers come out to say their piece on this. Don’t be shy guys, we’d like to know how you view this change. I lean more towards keeping the NSFW changes because otherwise this site looks deader than a doornail since non-NSFW posts are so few and far in between.

Burger,
@Burger@burggit.moe avatar

The_Entire_Circus,

Burger, to askburggit in How can we get more users?
@Burger@burggit.moe avatar

Because the Reddit protests faltered because of spineless powermods who wanted to hold onto their little bit of power, I think this is all the users we’re going to get. I’ve been messing around on our sister kbin instance because it gets us a better view of the broader fediverse that’s outside of the narrow scope of what are admittedly mostly 1:1 Reddit clones Lemmy seems to cover. Outragebait included.

I feel like we’ve turned into mainly a porn dumping ground and less of a discussion oriented community which decreases people’s willingness to engage with others on here. It’s a mostly 20:1 lurker to contributors ratio. I definitely lurk here most of the time too, so I’m just as guilty as the lurkers who are too shy to say anything on here.

It’s all word of mouth at this point. Anybody who had interest in migrating away from Reddit has already done so. It takes a lot to get someone who’s firmly entrenched on another platform to sign up for a different site anymore. If you so much as mention a requirement to sign up to partake, they almost immediately will shoot you down. We have easy SSO solutions like Google to thank for this amount of laziness and apathy. If you can’t sign in to a site with just a Google account to start chatting, you might as well not exist.

I really wish I knew of an easy solution to draw more users here, but I don’t think there is, sadly, because of the aforementioned above.

Ragemidi,
Ragemidi avatar

I feel like a better way is to use kbin more. Like you said, at least we're able to reach out to other instances with similar tastes. With Lemmy, you're only locked in to the threadiverse or whatever it's called.

tummies,

I only used kbin for a day or two when Reddit announced their API changes, so I’m not very familiar with it.

Can you explain why it’s easier to reach out on kbin than on Lemmy?

SomeRandomAccount,
@SomeRandomAccount@burggit.moe avatar

Kbin can federate with more software than lemmy, so there are more places to reach out to. Lemmy can pretty much only federate with other lemmy instances (or at the very least, it’s not very good at federating with non-lemmy instances). Based on what I’ve heard, kbin should also provide a better experince when federating with mastodon, pleroma, etc. since its UI’s more suited to it, but I haven’t used it for more than a few minutes.
