do you want to have a bunch of kikes UM AKSHUALLY YOU CAN'T USE THIS 19 VOLT DELL POWER CORD FOR YOUR HP LAPTOP WE MADE THE HOLE A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT SIZE AND ALSO THE POWER CORDS FROM OUR OTHER LAPTOPS ARE A DIFFERENT SIZE TOO

@skylar USB-C isn't going to solve that problem. maybe there will be a short period before they pivot to doing the exact same thing by requiring you to use their own cables and power supplies, but we'll end up in the exact same spot

and if legislation comes down to prevent it, they could've just as easily forced an actually good appliance power standard instead of the ridiculous rube goldberg USB-C shit we've got now

USB C is just the physical.... concerning power... if the source is USB type A its only outputting 5V... otherwise hopefully it plays nice and negotiates the right voltage... with an inline multimeter you can watch it start at 5, jump to 9, 12, 15(sometimes) then 19/19.5/20 ish at the highest level. Though i hear 48volt to match network POE gear is going to be in the PD standard... however it always comes down to the device green flagging the watts coming in... I can use a charger meant for 100w, cable meant for 100w, and the device says fuck it im pulling 45 watt

@zero @skylar I understand how it works

that's why I don't like it

@deprecated_ii @zero @skylar how would you do it?

@zero@nightshift.social avatar

the problem is that there are laptops that want 20v... the charger can be rated for 20v at greater amps than factory charger... like one that will feed 100+ watts when the laptop wants peak watts to be 90.

but despite everything on the chain explicitly saying its approved for 100+ watts... the laptop will only negotiate 45/65 watts meaning you arent charging you are only keeping the laptop on.

Yet the OEM charger which is rated for LESS... will happily feed it 90 watts..

The problem with the PD standard is that it is far from standard. Too much proprietary handshakes and negotiation.

@zero @deprecated_ii @skylar where is this creating problems?

@skylar @deprecated_ii Why does the male plug contain a female socket while the female end contains a male terminal? USB-C is made by crazy people.
