I spent all night killing my son and daughter in Quake III. What's wrong with retrogaming? What's the obsession with "new." If it was fun circa 2000, it's still fun now.
Quake was online, but older games sometimes had dedicated servers that aren't up anymore. If you can't directly hook up to a buddy's PC you might not be able to play online anymore.
If I recall there are some good quake and quake 2 open source engines that will do multiplayer too. Plus don't forget OpenArena, it will literally run on a raspberry pi.
I use open arena. I have 27 folders with 200 arena maps each. I symlinked the "main files" (modified sets of pk3 with textures, models, bots, etc) into each directory and just run a directory as a mod. I also made a script that generates a map cfg file from the pk3s, so openarena can randomly load maps.
