@subtype it's not paying for it, it's like "i really liked it, here's some change" which is pretty insignificant for the sender but can technically build up for the recipient. Aside from bad behaviour incentivizing I think it's a fun thing.
@subtype It's all supposedly sending semi-anonymous bitcoin (semi- in the way it's most definitely traceable to your fedi/nostr account, anything further than that depends on bitcoin's anonymity itself). It's tons better than any other tip giving systems which often take giant cuts or your paypal payment actually goes through directly to the recipient so both of you see each others paypal email addresses. I don't think there's much doxxing potential with this zap thing unless you're really stupid. Of Course, 10grans would've been better but oh well here we are
@Ukko@subtype Issue with 10grans is it's on a backwater chain that's hard to transact in and out of now. Bitcoin is taken everywhere. I've been looking at moving what chain 10grans is on but tbh people only really care about the bot these days.
@Ukko I mean yeah, but bitcoin isn’t anonymous, if someone wants to use the money for anything then the history is traceable. Paypal is dogshit. Stripe doxxes the sender to the recipient from what I remember (though 7666 wrote a blog post on that, I think you can at least avoid giving out your name).
I think handling money on the internet is risky in general, and I just don’t see why would anyone take these risks for tipping over shitposts, but maybe I’m just no fun.
@subtype arguable, you could use something like coinjoin + jumping chains to something more privacy-oriented like monero. Someone with enough resources could potentially still track you but they probably don't need the shitposting tips to do that. Of course if you want to pull everything out to fiat, it's not gonna be a fast thing + I don't think anybody is gonna be making that much money from zaps to be cashing it out for paying rent or something.
