@RustyCrab if you go to the homestead with the forge, then go up the hill behind it to the right, then go left uphill more and keep following the path, there's a prepper cache there. no guarantee it will have anything in it but it could also be a gold mine
I'd check that, then go back to mystery lake because there are like 6 spots you might find a gun I can think of off the top of my head. or if you're close to mystery lake just go back first
@deprecated_ii I may just restart in mystery lake now that I'm getting a better grip of how to play this. Story mode lets you do a lot of stuff that isn't afforded to you in normal mode and that threw me off.
@RustyCrab in mystery lake there's a high probability of finding vaughn's rifle in or around the dam
I often find a revolver at the ruined lookout next to a dead body on the ruined tower stairs (the fire tower that is wrecked, on the peak with the radio tower, across from the peak with the good fire tower)
check the good fire tower too, you can find a revolver or rifle there but that's a lower probability spawn in my experience. usually some other good stuff there anyway
trapper's homestead obviously but I almost never find a gun there. usually some ammo
then there's a prepper cache that's kinda hard to find. basically go across the lake to the rope at the far right corner, go up, go along the ridgeline until you're looking down at the tracks that go to forlorn muskeg, then go along the ridge to the right and the prepper cache is on a little flat spot where you can't see it until you're right on top of it. only a 1/9 chance it'll be the gun cache, 1/3 chance it will be a stocked cache of some kind
@deprecated_ii I will try to stick around mystery lake then. Honestly the wolves are just outright UNFAIR if you do not have a weapon. I think they should at least not spawn so much until you get one.
@deprecated_ii oh I entirely forgot there were difficulty levels. I'm on Voyager apparently. Still wolves track me from a pretty long distance and I'm running into them constantly. I didn't know about the torch thing.
@RustyCrab yeah voyageur you're still gonna have wolf problems but there's enough ammo that you can just shoot them once you're past the initial stages of not having any equipment
if you picked stalker I was going to tell you to go down to voyageur because stalker has shitloads of wolves that are very aggressive
@deprecated_ii forlorn muskeg has a ton of wolves and besides those caves there is just nowhere to hide from them. Probably was the worst place for me to go at this stage.
@RustyCrab the mystery lake prepper cache is a bit easier to find than I thought
up the rope, go right and there will be a cave downhill to the left. stay above it, go right around the giant rock, there should be rabbits running around in front of you, go right more and up the steep hill and the prepper cache is in a little depression up there
the one I got this time was the kitchen version, lots of food, distress pistol, and some good clothing
@RustyCrab if you ever find the prepper cache with a bunch of ammo and a rifle, check the vent grate because there will likely be a revolver hidden in there
@RustyCrab also maybe stashed in the pipes on the other side of the dam exterior, have to walk across the little ledge and go to the back right. I've found it there several times
and then when you go back into the dam via the window on that side it'll sometimes be leaning on the desk to the left as you enter
the last place I've found it is in the cave below the dam, on the left as you go down the river with rabbits in front of it. often some good starter gear there too, skill book maybe
@RustyCrab I'm not sure if the unique weapons always spawn (assuming rifles/revolvers aren't turned off in the settings) but I can't recall ever checking all of the spots vaughn's rifle could be and not finding it
@RustyCrab oh yeah and when you come back in the lower dam from outside and go down the staircase, there's a big cardboard box under the stairs that might have a revolver in it
@RustyCrab it occurred to me that I'm basing this stuff on the game + dlc and IDK if you're using the dlc. I've been playing with the dlc for quite awhile and don't really remember which stuff (aside from the new zones) came from that, and which stuff was regular updates to the base game
@deprecated_ii I'm running a fitgirl repack + DLC from earlier this year. There's a new one out now so I'm wondering if I should update.
After a few false starts I'm trying a short run on mystery lake pilgrim. I mainly want to get a feel for where things are and where the dead ends are. I have to say this is WAY too easy now. I get that's the point but that's a pretty extreme drop in difficulty between the two. Ironically though the resource timers seem significantly more realistic than the standard "walk across a football field and die"
@deprecated_ii I made my way up to the dam, poked around for 10 minutes and WADDYAKNOW rifle was sitting by one of those control panels. Now I just need ammo.
@deprecated_ii I started a new campaign in mountain town just to see what was there and ran into a moose immediately. I don't have any weapons of course so there's not a whole lot I can do with this encounter
