i know that it can sometimes seem like fedi has a pedophilia problem, but... its my belief that its not any worse here than it is on corpo platforms
the difference is that here, on fedi, we call out people who are engaged in grooming and pedophilia. this makes it much more obvious.
however, on the corpo platforms, stuff gets dragged under the rug. algorithms suppress callout posts, etc. like, you've seen what my server provider is doing by trying to force me to take down my callout posts on hanna. corpo social media is gonna be a lot more swift and direct about that.
so, it may seem worse here, but i really dont believe it is. i think its just more visible.
@ashten I agree with this take. Visibility of a problem does not mean that the problem is widespread. It’s just that we are more able to notice it. Fedi has a paedophile problem because our society has a paedophile problem. Fedi has a racism problem because our society has a racism problem. The vices and ills are much easier to publicly surface on Fedi than on other platforms because of those things you’ve mentioned.
This doesn’t preclude them from being worse than elsewhere (I would imagine that the decentralised nature may make grooming more easy to evade) but your point still stands on its own merit.
