aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
minecraft lan isn't working
what a huge pain

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 firewall? router?

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko probably router but can't find the problem
no firewall at all on my pc

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 maybe sun's pc?

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko doubt it
how does lan even work
is she supposed to connect to the router on 192.168.1.1 or to my pc on 192.168.1.X

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 I believe your minecraft sends a multicast packet which goes to the router and the router then sends it to everyone in the local network and her minecraft listens to it and that's how she will see the "available game open on LAN"

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 And I'm not sure if you can do the direct server connection to a game open to LAN but maybe I'm wrong, that would be your PC IP address then. anyways if you can manage to make her PC connect to yours on IP layer then you can just run a dedicated server on one of the PCs lmao

TURBORETARD9000,

@Ukko @paula9 in the olden days it was direct to PC, or at least that's how we got it to work
Been forever though so idk for sure anymore

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko something else i tried was hosting a simple http server (with python3 -m http.server) and seeing if i could wget it from her pc
it didn't work
i can see both pcs on the router page, it all matches

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 alright just to make sure, you both are actually connected to the same network and the same interface (so both are the same wifi or both are plugged up with ethernet)? I know one time I was stuck on getting my phone connecting to my pc for so long until i realised it was on data

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 check if your router has some settings for port filtering or protocol filtering, if ping goes through that means ICMP is going through, if wget/http isn't going through that means TCP isn't going through, if minecraft's direct connection isn't going through that means UDP isn't going through. I'd expect if you get TCP working, UDP will have a similar toggle nearby

18+ paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko theres way too much stuff on my router settings
maybe its this routing page

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 hmmmm the Network->LAN option just lists the connected devices? If my memory still works NAT Forwarding is concerning connections going from outside to inside

18+ paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko network lan only has this
connected devices show up on dhcp server page
and yeah from what i know nat forwarding is for outside to inside

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko fuck lan
port forwarding i guess

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko still not working :pain:
im on debian, ufw isn't installed but maybe it blocks connections by default for some reason @marisa

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 @marisa yea idk what's happening

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko @marisa its super weird cause if i connect to my ip on the browser, it does go to my router page...

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 @marisa wait what, if you type in the IP that is assigned to your PC it opens your router's page??

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko @marisa no no, my public ipv4 address

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 @marisa your "public ip address" is the router's address from the outside

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko @marisa yeah
i can see that
but port forwarding isn't working

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 @marisa wait what are you doing. You both are inside the LAN so you should use whatever IP the router's DHCP is assigning to you to talk to each other

aZa1905,
@aZa1905@mastodon.social avatar

@Ukko @marisa @paula9 this is the solution

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@aZa1905 @marisa @paula9 she fixed it by connecting via IPv6 idk what is going on but I guess they managed to play minecraft in the end

aZa1905,
@aZa1905@mastodon.social avatar

@Ukko @marisa @paula9 well. Yeah it works too.
But it should work just fine with the local IPv4 lol

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko @marisa >The default Debian installation comes with the program iptables(8), configured to allow all traffic
nah thats not it
what is it then :pain:

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko wait im on cable and her on wifi does that matter

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 in a perfect world it shouldn't matter, but try connecting to wifi with your PC

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko wait nvm i am on wifi
i thought about that and disconnected the cable

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko i do not understand
i tried pinging her local address and it pings
but trying to connect to it or the router does not work

Ukko,
@Ukko@akko.disqordia.space avatar

@paula9 maybe your router is filtering out some packets? which seems weird, I'd expect they wouldn't care about what traffic goes around within their LAN unless there's a parental lock

paula9,
@paula9@comp.lain.la avatar

@Ukko aaaaaaaaa i give up
i hate networks
