The difference between modern gaming and the past is that in the 90s some guy with a PC/Amiga/PC-98 was writing his own games and got a few bros together to make a game that would kick ass.
In the 2020s it's hustle culture (think asset flippers, third world app store devs, etc.), that guy who really badly wants to work at some AAA dev or Nintendo to the point of living in his car to be an underpaid tester, and subversives who only want in to "change the industry" as they were instructed to by college and Twitter.com.
@Hoss There's a lot of talentless female devs who instead of making something like The Sims or Harvest Moon or AC (that's what women play), want to make Tumblr tier trash and say "I'm a developer with a VAGINA".
It's even worse with men in dresses because they are extremely likely to make a game that has politics inserted somewhere at best (body type a/b, trans flags, etc.), and at worst games like "Dys-4-Ia" which is basically Depression Quest tier.

@trump@Hoss With 343 I'd argue the issue more is if you hired people at a Mexican restaurant, who hate Mexican food. They said this in the interview too, they hate Mexican food.
You then ask them how they would do it, and it's no longer Mexican food. The customers are pissed off and leave, if it's not Taco Bell and they're making food abortions anyway.
This is why Halo 4 and subsequent Halo titles feel like trend chasers. They did not give a single fuck about what people wanted outside of the "no bloom" patch for Reach which tbf was a complaint for years on bungie.net (where they also ignored complaints).
Shit like video related was seen as the straw that broke the camel's back with Halo fans. It wasn't solely ESG, but rather being run by people who were openly making decisions the playerbase hated and laughing in their face, learning nothing from the Reach Bloom saga.

Unsurprisingly, he too no longer works at 343.
