WHY ARE YOU AT STARBUCKS

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@PeachySummer because the last good independent coffee shop here doesn't have working WiFi

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@PeachySummer I've been telling them to fix it for like a year at this point and they won't do anything about it

@PeachySummer what the fuck plan are you on that you can get unlimited hotspot data

PeachySummer,
@PeachySummer@nicecrew.digital avatar

You gotta get an app that masks it. Can't remember what it's called 🤔

@RustyCrab @PeachySummer

What device do you think Peachy actually tethers to her phone? Just even theoretically.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@0 @PeachySummer that's a good question. iPad?

@RustyCrab @PeachySummer

Nothing, she's talking out of her ass. "I can't remember the name of an app, because I don't use it."

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@0 @PeachySummer I looked up how carriers even tell you're using a hotspot and I'm not getting a straight answer right away.

I'm using calyx and routing through a VPN so I'm wondering now if they can even tell in the first place. I'll try it and check my usage.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@0 @PeachySummer honestly I never even thought about how a carrier would tell if you're using a hotspot unless the hardware is volunteering that info which seems unlikely

@RustyCrab @PeachySummer

With phones the likelihood of hardware volunteering is increased, but yeah I haven't had issues with tethering. I still run into issues with caps (also pay for a mifi for working, but it also hits caps.)

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@0 @PeachySummer do you have a carrier phone? Mine isn't associated with any.

0,
@0@gh0st.live avatar

@RustyCrab @PeachySummer

I don't think it's a carrier phone, just swapping the sim should work? I have not tried it. Giving me flashbacks to the Verizon board I worked with, which required a business account, wouldn't work with anything else.

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@0 @PeachySummer yeah I'm asking because it would probably be trivial for a carrier phone to distinguish regular from hotspot data.

I'm running calyx on a pixel and I would actually be surprised if it volunteered and info about the hotspot.

Then again I have no idea how it works but I'm going to test it when I can.

Not since 2014, bro.

@RustyCrab @PeachySummer wait wait. That's a thing? Unlimited mobile data but restricted hotspot data? I've never heard of this

RustyCrab,
@RustyCrab@clubcyberia.co avatar

@inertia @PeachySummer yes it's explicitly listed on the plan. Hotspot data is very limited unless you pay out the nose.

However I never actually thought about how they tell, and with my phone I actually doubt they could.

@RustyCrab @PeachySummer @inertia my carrier offers “unlimited” hotspot data but throttles after 5GB I think
