since our new friends are unfamiliar, i usually do maintenance over night on weekends and this week is no different :grafstare:

tonight's task: working on the matrix.

i've brought our config in line with the current config as outlined in the new documentation since the last time it was revisited was 3 years ago.

added users the ability to create their own spaces. now you can create a discord-like "server" complete with your own rooms and community with ease using the element client (or any that support the spaces feature which i think now is most clients)

will be working manually on the matrix database tonight as it's once again almost 1TB on disk. dont expect any downtime but it is possible. there will likely be downtime tomorrow overnight while a full vacuum is completed to remove what's left from me compressing room states tonight.

@alex do you remember off the top of your head if mastodon dedupes files? im wondering if in torba's infinite wisdom he's still operating off a 2019-2020 fork of mastodon where even the thumbnails aren't checked and that is leading to his issues which would be infinitely more funny than an exit scam

@graf @judgedread It is really amazing, torba must use the worst patel coders. I've never run a major site with media uploads but I can guess its something like "dedupe, cdn cache new uploads for 7-10 days, then expire to cold storage on cheap spinning rust"

One of the craziest things I've seen recently is a yogurt advertising that there was a layer of fruit on the bottom as a selling point. That is unincorporated ingredients they're trying to get people to incorporate themselves while paying a premium to do so. That is crazy.

@sjw If i recall the product is set in the cup, also has gelatin added in the process so it ends up stratified kinda like a pudding cup. You couldnt get that with a blended strained yogurt.

@WashedOutGundamPilot @Terry I keep telling people that instead of making a political "party", they should be organizing a fraternal organization. There are a lot of good tax and legal exemptions that work in our favor for this type of organization over that of a PAC/LLC.
