I wanna go to university in America. And also get a gun. I can't wait to take it to school.
See? I'm American already!

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@silas after your first 48-60 hour work week, then you'll be American...

@silas you want a part-time job. They don't pay nearly as well.

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@silas no, but I don't know many people who actually work a 9-5 hourly job

Most people with an office 9-5 are salary, and they'll make you work over whenever they feel like it. You're already getting paid.

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@silas ROFL 🤣

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@silas if you are an hourly employee you know how much you'll get paid based on how many hours you work

First 40 are for straight time, after that you get overtime pay

It's simple math, you're German, won't be hard to figure that out

If you don't work, you don't get paid. It's a simple system.

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@silas my last job paid every two weeks, but weekly is the norm.

Most bills are monthly

Is math so hard that you can't figure out how much you're getting paid hourly?

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@silas it's rude

In polite company, you're not supposed to talk about:

  • Politics
  • Money
  • Religion
  • Sex

It's not as strict as it once was, but it's still considered rude.

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@silas sure, you should come here and do it. Then explain to people, when you piss them off, why they shouldn't be offended.

"Listen, it's stupid for you to be angry and I'm gonna explain why..." 🤣

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@silas but they will get mad here

I'm just telling you

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@silas a plumber can make more than a doctor here in the US

Just depends on where you live and how much you're willing to work

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@Evil_Bender @silas house and everything is paid for by then, as long as he's taken rudimentary precautions

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@Evil_Bender @silas makes sense

Medical school, hell college in general, has gotten too expensive. The onerous cost of compliance when Obamacare further compounds that.

We'll have a doctor crisis in the US within 10-20 years. I think it's already started.

Let's assume, for a moment, that global warming is real and it is an existential crisis.

Do you think that novel interventions that could wildly disrupt the atmosphere couldn't possibly have unintended, catastrophic effects?

That the "cure" could be worse than the "problem"?

Experts don't have a great track record accounting for "unintended consequences".

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@skylar So concerned about CO2, when are we going to address the greatest contributor to global warming -- water vapor!

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@skylar @icedquinn another solution might be to remove the requirement for ethanol in gasoline

In higher concentrations, ethanol becomes a more potent pollutant, is less energy dense, increases the cost of animal feed, increases the cost of food (corn is a staple for many cultures) and would require less corn to be planted (no subsidies for corn for energy production would result in less corn being planted/grown).

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@icedquinn @kf01 @skylar diesel used to be cheaper than gas and congressional regulation ruined that

FortyTwo,
@FortyTwo@noauthority.social avatar

@kf01 @icedquinn @skylar both really good points

As difficult as it is to make anything, it's even more difficult to make it simple and safe.

In the 1970s, several major attempts were made to show that inhalation of tobacco smoke would produce lung cancer in mice, rats, hamsters, dogs, and even monkeys.

Although some of these experiments involved thousands of animals, the aggregated evidence failed to confirm the human epidemiological studies. Inhalation of tobacco smoke, even if conducted over the lifetime of animals, failed to reproduce the disease seen in man
