@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id

not called Brad but rather a lad, from Bradford in the UK.

Enjoys breaking apps, escooters, spam rings and sometimes bones, but not my own. That sucks.

I keep pondering why Android has blobs for CIFS/SMB but not NFS, too.

Still haven’t found a legit reason why.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Yeah no doubt, and that’s why I like Tailscale.

I just map all users Tailnet visitors to guest, and give me r/w and all others r/o.

Bugs me though that they could include it, with big red flashy warnings like you get enabling USB debugging.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Ultimately VPN users aren’t a protected class so it’s legal to discriminate.

This is what I’ve always found fascinating about companies and governments trying to block their usage.

All major firms/companies/governments use them, so, how the hell are they gonna stop them when their bosses get poked that’s something’s up 🙉

Fun times ahoy.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

how much they must value our personal data, that it only just now became worthwile to fight blockers with this much effort and PR/image depreciation.

You got it, on the nose.

Shadow boxing is always good practice.

It’s an analogy

Preparing to fight beforehand.

ladfrombrad,

my comment meant I was preparing to fight.

You’re not.

Google are thou hence the shadowboxing reference.

ladfrombrad,

How long has Google been killing things now?

ladfrombrad,

Because generally the TSA in Yankland are overly aggressive, but to be fair it can happen anywhere and here in the UK if they snag you into the backroom and want to search your phone you’re screwed either way since they, can.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

We’re talking about Nintendo here, and we all remember Sony taking away things that made things better too, right?

ladfrombrad,

Seems a bit dubious doesn’t it, especially since they’d be compromising any investigation by Tweeting about it in the first place.

:thinking_gif:

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I’m unsure if there’s something on Lemmy for that, but it’s definitely something that helps the community since most mod actions I recall are poking people in the right direction like PAAFM.

Awesome team and community over there, and there is the old wiki pages too 🤔

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Yeah I’m unsure of the scheduling of posts on Lemmy, and I know @coles is looking into some form of Automod here on lemdro.id.

Let me poke a few more others ;)

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Yeah! I’ve been working far too hard and meant to get back to you, and the main admin has had a IRL issue so I can’t nag them right now and they also mentioned they need to update the instance?

You had a gander through the docs/GitHub to see if an existing thing lives for scheduled posts and could be even hosted by a numbnuts here on a spare Pi etc?

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

So, I just had a gander myself and this is pretty involved

github.com/RikudouSage/LemmySchedule

Maybe there’s some existing thing I’m missing but it would be cool :/

@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Are you seriously touting a title like that as legit?

edit:

Removed under Rule 1, nothing to do with Android and also flagged for excessive self promotion

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Was there an advert for Age of War in the article that made your script include it here randomly?

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Hold on a second Mister OP, you missed the most important pros and cons.

Has an IR Blaster thank fuck, but, is missing a 3.5mm jack and SDCard.

I know these “cons” are meme complaints by now and while I’ve actually used Bluetooth earbuds before Android was a thing (see, jackless Sony Walkman W850…), but feel you should be including them as cons since many revel for those simple hardware bonuses we’re used to from Xiaomi.

Alas :(

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

It’s ridiculous they don’t include either and I say that as someone who doesn’t actually need either, really.

But it’s nice to be able to backup my DCIM folder to the SDcard and then sync that via a network share on a regular basis, especially if I hadn’t got adb enabled and/or I had a smashed screen?

It also allows me to just wipe my internal storage anytime without worry because I don’t record many videos and photos take up fugg all storage with a 3.2.1 backup plan.

edit: What’s the point of excluding, a headphone jack too I feel is the real question.

Even if my carrier tried charging me for a MMS, fools on me if they do succeed since I’m PAYG.

If they manage to fool you into paying for them? Fool on you for signing up to contracts that allow that behaviour. And the fact that you’re looking for a solution to this is very “blinkered”.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Indeedys!

Exactly what I do and I feel the MVNO market here in the UK has kept things sane for quite a few years now. The problem exists when people take out “contract deals” and get themselves into “credit”.

Also the fact we can now text our current operator for a PACode means we can jump between PAYG deals, monthly.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

No doubt, and there used to be an app called “all for one IR remote” or something like that that I can’t find from a cursory skim.

It allowed programming of codes from your existing remotes and also the bonus of using a URI for a IR code which then meant you could fire them off with other apps.

Problem these days is the hardware that supports IR Blasters is controlled by the likes of Xiaomi, and the apps available to use said hardware is limited to in-built system apps :/

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Don’t fret.

Things like this are next year and some other intern will have a new product name to bolden their advert battalion.

The cycle never ends, and they don’t click on that we ain’t having it :/

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I’m lost. Why is this ruining Android?

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I’m just waiting for everything they haven’t killed to merge onto YouTube

Me and ye both.

Using the “website” YouTube in my mobile browser sucks and I have to disable their “app” because it’s a system app for some reason or other, to then allow me to use a better app like Newpipe without their system app popping up in the share menu every time I get an update.

Speaking of updates my Xiaomi just updated to A14, and even thou I have Chrome disabled I now get this…

If you’ve got decent throughput at home buying a rasp pi 3/4 means you can have your own VPN

My curiosity lies with peeps like the above actually being to walk around their house and not find things Made in China.

I know I’d be hard pressed, and then components in devices?

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

at a very low price

This is another thing that makes me curious.

I live up North of the UK where prices are cheaper, wages are lower. Much much lower than the same costs etc down…south of the very same country.

Things costing less than getting priced up for the sake of it, simply because of geography, is kinda baffling.

ladfrombrad, (edited )
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

All you need to do is pay a bit extra.

Like I said in another comment in here, I find it odd that we need/want to pay more for things that don’t actually cost that more but do because some companies can’t run the books right (ie: fat cats and excessive profits) and end up with massive corps having to submit a First Gazette Notice.

I had no idea what that meant since I found out last night my company I work for here in the UK, has done just that :/

ladfrombrad, (edited )
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Being a consumer means I don’t attribute others ethics, nor ideology, when making a buying decision.

I buy things because I’m a consumer of goods that tries to save myself from having to spend more, to line others greedy pockets though.

If those are my ethics, call me a dirty consumer perhaps? But people getting paid minimum wages whilst people who do nothing other than tell their sales department to up their price “just because” it doesn’t come from a certain geography is like chopping your nose off to spite your face IMO.

edit: I found a perfect example of this. Berghaus fleece Vs a Amazon basics, or hell, even a Regatta fleece. Just the badge, and nothing else.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Absolutely!

And when you have a finite amount of money / time left on this planet I uphold my values of buying the best bang for buck.

Whether that’s my Xiaomi router, phone, scooter, or even the cheapo Amazon basics fleece the first thing I do is look at the price and not if it comes from a country that others don’t like.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

AP telling me things are not interesting smells like clickbait.

Why the hell did that happen?

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I think from some of the comments they’re concerned that it won’t be a toggleable flag, that at any point, some spooky man from Google or some 3 letter agency can enable and/or override.

At any time. Which is a very fair point?

However, swings and roundabouts from my end likes the idea of being able to recover lost/stolen hardware so I’d like to hear others voices on it.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I kinda like the camera layout?

While it reminds me of the 🥺 emote, it’ll sure be an interesting device @£319 and midrange buyers / tinkerers.

ladfrombrad,

Google Maps?

I was searching for somewhere the other month and with my phone didn’t realise it could superimpose things like that

I have a Cubot King Kong 5 Pro. Yes, it’s named that.

I haven’t even had the endurance to test its battery life. Thing lasts forever if it has no SIM card / WiFi / BT and might as well be a MP3 player that lasts you weeks.

edit: I turned it on 5 days ago after this comment and turned weefee/BT/NFC off. 85% remaining.

Should be a fun thing to watch.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Probably read the rules and post in !androidmemes, which got auto populated by Boost for Lemmy upon me typing it. Which was fucking neat.

Then, learn how to use adb shell list packages` to list your entire app list.

Also, androidcirclejerk has a really good list of the common apps peeps usually jerk about, but I ain’t linking weddit.

Good luck!

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Gotta be honest I’ve used Syncthing for a while and the forked app too, but yet again gone back to SMB2Sync

I don’t know if it’s the nerdiness or granular nature of it, but I prefer it and I don’t have to worry about the client/device being up to date like you do with Syncthing?

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I think you meant to reply to my top level comment and Lemmy can be a little iffy, at the best of times?

But I don’t agree that Syncthing is "way easier than using CIFS/SMB. I actually find once you understand how the syncing process is happening and when makes things much more apparent.

Also yay no more worrying about it being off site and fulfilling the 3-2-1 mantra.

I now have a 6+5+4+3+2+1 thanks to two routers with OpenWRT on them off site 🥳

Have you got any sources for Motorola phones coming with spyware on them?

ladfrombrad, (edited )
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

You are probably going to say “but those are Lenovo laptops, not Motorola phones”.

I asked for sources on Motorola phones being compromised, but I ain’t seeing that still?

Aspersions don’t equal anecdotes > evidence. You show me that and I’ll shout louder than you.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

You don’t need to pay a subscription fee for cloud storage when it’s super simple to host your own, and Android allows the mounting of different filesystems too.

SMB on a rasp pi + cheapo storage + Tailscale, all the way to paying £$€ for a dedicated NAS enclosure with as much storage as you can afford also with Tailscale?

Yup, fuck subscription fees.

You also can then use the corporate cloud storage providers like G/ProtonDrive etc to use their free offerings for off site backup of the most important data.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Funny you mention that, I had the M7/8 like OP and also had one of those Dot Matrix cases for mine which gave you a second screen so to speak. You could even use custom apps with it.

Another thing I bought at the time was one of these for the headphone jack. Never really caught on thou :/

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Aye, me too and like you say it’s hard to not defeat the point of one if you’re unplugging the bloody thing all the time.

The one I’ve got thou did come with three cables of different lengths and for a while I used the short 0.5m at work since I could just jam it in small cargo pants pocket, medium length stored in locker and the longer 3m one at home. Still unplugged the adapter and is now in a drawer…somewhere.

Saying this, they do have the bonus (including that 3.5mm button thing i have above) of making the device more water resistant 👀
