When writing code of any kind, use this thought experiment.

When you go to hell, you must do, by hand, all of the computational work a computer has ever done on your behalf. And I'm not talking "Do 3+7 on paper", I'm talking you do every MOV, EAX, ADD, etc.

You'll either write efficient code or you'll decide this computer shit ain't worth it.
