@PurpCat Another name someone should add to the list would be that guy from good (who's name I can't remember now). He wrote some memo basically saying that the culture in google is hostile to men, and especially White men, and that he's like to see that change. They then fired, and last I saw, he still didn't have a solid job.

@PurpCat It's unbelievable how deep this rabbit hole goes. I remember feeling bad for Damore at the time, but thinking it was just a lot of noise and of very little substance passed him getting fired without much recourse. I had no idea so many big names were a part of that.

@PurpCat I guess I always assumed that, depending on the game, it was either that humans did and still existed in that world, but you were far away from them for whatever reason, or that you were a human from this (our) world transported to the pokemon world as a pokemon.

@PurpCat Yeah. I always have a hard time telling if a place is abandoned just because, or abandoned because humans are all dead. There are so many abandoned places in Pokemon, I usually default to the former.

Everyone through Netflix and Amazon. They, in turn, fund basic television (cable is basically dead at this point), with costs offset by ads and often for free (see Tubi or Freevee). But generally, it itself does not need to make money, they just need to get enough money to sustain it because it's too valuable to let go.

Food and housing would be cheap, I imagine, especially if you went to live on a colony. It seems like the only things that have value is anything with any sort of novelty, and I'm not sure what people would trade to obtain it, or how they would go about to obtain it, since it's suppose to be some sort of Randian society where people work for fun or something.

I look at it similar to how Asians were treated in the US during the early 1900's. Asians in California were treated quite bad, while they weren't in Texas. The reason for the discrepancy is that the Chinese in California were competing for resources among Californians, while the Japanese in Texas were there to farm rice, something no Texans were doing at the time. The Japanese were not stepping on Texan toes, and so were largely welcomed in Texas.

Racism is a product of competition. When two groups are competing for the same resources, they'll fight. When they aren't, they likely get along.

@D@poa.st @Remi What's weird is I'm certain that 99% of isekai stuff was directly inspired by the DnD craze of the 80's, which also inspired jrpg's as a whole. Looking at those old crpgs of the era, and a lot of them could also be an isekai anime.

@Awoo I'm sort of mystified that America does not get more shit for it's animals. Lots of venomous snakes, venimous lizards, Africanized honey bees, invasive fire ants, wild cats, hawk wasps, bears, wolves, coyotes, and plenty of large spiders, but everyone seems to ignore it.

I think the difference is the population density of both, it gives the illusion that North American, and specifically the US, doesn't have the same kinds of animals. It's why every so often in a major city, you see a news report like "woman squished really big spider" or "man finds rattle snake in porch", people seem to have forgot that there are wild animals.

@baraposter @Awoo @ceo_of_monoeye_dating Brown recluses are an interesting thing. They can't actually bite you on their own (most spiders are like that actually), and instances when they do bite are because of the exact situation you described. Spider in bed sheets (or in clothes), it gets pinned against your skin and the pressure of you or your clothes against the spider is enough to initiate a bite. Otherwise they'd just run away.

The other thing is that their bites probably are not as venomous as we once thought. What's probably happening is the necrosis people report is actually a secondary staph infection after the bite, which people attribute to the venom itself. So long as the bite it kept clean, the effects are pretty minor. This is usually the extent of their bite after a week.

@Awoo @baraposter @ceo_of_monoeye_dating Yeah, same with the Recluse and Hobos in the US (though the conciseness with the hobo is that it probably can't hurt you).

I've basically taken it that unless it's a member of the widow family, spiders can't seriously hurt me, and so long as it's not the size of my palm, it probably can't even bite me without me doing something stupid.

Use to be super afraid of spiders, but I forced myself to realize that they can't hurt me, and now I'm not afraid of them.

I think all of the continental US has at least one, except maybe Alaska ever since the continental US was so kind to gift Hawaii Latrodectus Mactans. Up north, like Minnesota, there are the Latrodectus Variolus, these guys.

@Paleloon @baraposter @Awoo @ceo_of_monoeye_dating Skin infections are no joke. About a year ago I got one and ignored it (because I'm healthy, not obese, under 30, not diabetic, etc etc etc). It caused sepsis and a rash over my entire body that looked like chicken pox. It nearly killed me.

@mushroom_soup I never got how tails would work with clothing. A tail would be hard to fit through a hole in the pants, and it would effectively make the pants useless. Wearing a skirt would be similarly impractical unless the tail always stays limp.

@givenup @mushroom_soup The issues, I think, is that it would be hard to put your pants on if you also had a tail. The other thing is that it would be so close to your butt that a tail hole in your pants would mean it really wouldn't cover your rear.

I've had this idea for "tail pants", something people might have worn if they had tails, but I don't know if it would really work, or if it would even be necessary - maybe tail holes would work just fine.

@deprecated_ii It is kind of astonishing how much interacting with an AI is like how the computer works in Star Trek. You need to know what to ask, and the AI can give very useful answers.

@deprecated_ii An obvious problem with this going forward is that future generations who grew up with AI will not be as competent in knowing what to ask, as they will have far less hands on experience with code. I think people will look back on code written by people in the same way that we look at hand made wood furniture.

@RustyCrab @deprecated_ii Exactly. I've used it to spring board story ideas. "I have this idea for a character, but can't think of a good motivation for them, could you provide some?"

With code, you need to check it first, obviously. If you are experienced, then it's possible to identify where it made a mistake. I've had it solve complex physics problems, and while it seems to make mistakes, often the approaches it takes to solving them are solid, so you can let it do the heavy lifting so long as you know what you are doing.

You must destroy monsters in their hand, you must up to three monsters in their deck. The use of conditions passed the first act seems strange.
