So as you may or may not know, I have a huge LCD arrival board from Stuttgart airport at home. Back when I went to Stuttgart to go and get that one, I also visited the company that had made it, since their workshop was also close to Stuttgart. It was a small company and the owner was a super nice guy, and he gave me and my friends who had joined me a lot of old stuff from the company inventory, including this little display!

It was originally just a black box with some LCDs in it, without the lettering, clock, or LEDs on the side. It was a test / showcase unit! The original firmware presented an interactive way to enter text via RS-232, but we lacked documentation and couldn't get it to work reliably, and my bf had other plans for it that would not work with this kind of input. So the firmware would have to be replaced.

Inside were more or less the same electronics as in the large board, so I thought "Well, let's just put the firmware from my large arrival board onto it". Well, turns out my large board has a more modern controller with onboard flash, while this little guy has the older version with a socketed EPROM. No good. But luckily, we didn't just get the one large board from the airport. No no, we got three! Two of them were outdoor variants, and those DID have the same controller inside.

@lachlan not really, but then again, I have a bit of experience with the various split-flap systems that were in use in Germany. Basically I just built a wooden frame and slotted the modules in. Some flat cable along the back and an ESP32 as the external controller

@Drayventhal that's the main problem. Most things are just decorative or I occasionally turn them on to look at them and be happy. But at least for the large one I'd like to use it as a kind of reminder of my schedule and other tasks...
