the absolute joy of wanting to start reverse engineering something, being about to create a new project folder and noticing there already is one because you already did a lot of reverse engineering and basically got something working years ago

After a few years in storage, I put the microsyst display back up! Still missing a power supply, but at least the wiring is done already :3

Don't wanna tell too much, but I've written a script that automates the entire badge generation process for Frankfurt :D it involves getting order data from pretix, generating input images, programmatically generating SVGs (5 MB lol) out of those input images, rendering those as PNGs in the correct size, pasting them into the badge template, and generating a PDF out of all the badges. :3

Ich wünsche mir mehr Apps die die Option „Sprachbachrichten nicht akzeptieren“ anbieten.

Damit ich net immer diesen peer pressure abbekomme sie anhören zu müssen, Leuten zu erklären dass ich sie net mag oder sie zu ignorieren.

Einfach das Problem auf die Ebene „This user blocks voice messages“ zu schieben.

Nachteil an Esstisch direkt vorm Fenster: Wenn Dachdecker auf der angeschlossenen Dachterasse randalieren unbenutzbar, denn ich glaube niemand von uns möchte für die jeweils andere Seite auf dem Präsentierteller sein :D

I updated my WLED controller yesterday and ever since, one of the two segments (part of the same WS2812 chain) reacts with a few seconds of delay when commanded from home assistant. What the heck

smart home is great! swaps batteries of light switch you can just set up all the lights and switches opens door sensor and exchanges battery to do whatever you want! repeatedly pushes pairing button of temperature sensor you should really try it out!

TIL: Wenn man eine Magnetspule aus einem Superconductor hat, und eine Moeglichkeit die Spule mit einem Superconductor-Switch kurzzuschliessen, dann kann man quasi die Spule "aufladen", den Switch closen, und das Magnetfeld bleibt erhalten. Mind blown.

@Drayventhal Das ist jetzt halt wieder typisch - jetzt schauen wieder alle genau hin und machen auch einen AUfriss um kleinere Pannen, die einfach ab und an mal passieren. Und für Otto Normalverbraucher ist es ja egal, ob da systematisch bei der Herstellung Probleme passieren oder bei der Wartung ein Einzelfehler passiert ist :D

But by the point my bf and me were trying to get the little display running, the two other displays were already with their new owners, which wasn't a huge problem since I knew them, but it meant I didn't have easy access to the firmware. So I had to wait a bit for a friend to find some time to either dump the firmware from the EPROM or send it to me, which he did last week! So I put the EPROM into the little board's controller and it ALMOST worked.

Three of the four lines were controllable via the RS-485 data interface, but the fourth one kept showing weird garbage. I was confused, because the larger displays had WAY more lines and it was the same firmware and hardware after all. Or was it? It took me a while, but I realised that in the large displays, every line had its own line driver board connected to it.

So why did it allow three lines to be controlled then? Well, you see, in the miniature display, each line has 20 characters. So three lines would amount to 60 characters, which seems to be the maximum the firmware sends out per line. Weirdly enough, the displays with that specific firmware had only 40 characters per row, while the one I have has 60, but that one has a more modern controller. Apparently, the older ones are also compatible with the 60-charcter lines.

Anyway! So it only sends 60 characters, which makes for three lines. Then why did the fourth line show garbage instead of just staying blank? I'm not quite sure actually. I guess that is due to how those line drivers work. I suspect that the way they work is that the LCD bitstream is prefaced with a header that gets read by the line drivers, checked for the line driver address, and only if that matches, it's passed on to the LCDs in that line. Maybe it doesn't like more than 60 characters?

But be that as it may, I wanted to get all 4 lines working. So I grabbed the box of spare parts that I had conveniently gotten from the manufacturer as well, and took out one more line driver. I daisy chained it to the existing line driver and reconnected the LCDs in the miniature display such that the display is now split into two logical lines of 40 characters, which are four physical lines of 20 characters. This finally makes it possible to control the entire display. Woohoo! :D

So now I can finally write some code to make it show departures at my bf's local airport. He was the one who added the clock, LEDs and text to the display btw, which I think makes the whole thing just so much nicer :D

@vivi the large one is from Stuttgart, the smallest one is a demo unit from the manufacturer of the large one, and the medium sized one is a test unit from a different manufacturer, I don't think that was ever at an airport.

@karpour I think the large ons is at a few hundred watts, the medium one at around 100-150 and the small one should be around 20-30? Rough estimates based on what I know is inside
