Surely opinions on this are going to vary wildly? Lemmy is full of people installing graphene and de-googling, while I’m happy with stock Android on Pixels with a custom launcher. Samsung, Sony and Asus all have serious devotees as well.

There’s also different responses depending on what you want in a phone. Some people want smaller than 6", others must have a 3.5mm jack. Some want SD storage. The camera is vital for me, but most of my colleagues don’t really care about the camera.

How would you sift through all that for a “best” one size fits all phone?

Blaze,

That’s the whole idea of the thread.

User 1 comes and say “I want the best camera phone, I don’t care about ROM, I would actually prefer stock”

User 2 comes and say “I want the most future-proof phone, ideally with GrapheneOS, but I can do with Calyx or other custom ROMS”

The thread wouldn’t be a “one size fits all”, it would be a collection of requests and suggestions

I’m unsure if there’s something on Lemmy for that, but it’s definitely something that helps the community since most mod actions I recall are poking people in the right direction like PAAFM.

Awesome team and community over there, and there is the old wiki pages too 🤔

Blaze,

Could we maybe try to recreate this here a bit with such regular pinned threads?

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Yeah I’m unsure of the scheduling of posts on Lemmy, and I know @coles is looking into some form of Automod here on lemdro.id.

Let me poke a few more others ;)

Blaze,

Thanks!

Blaze,

Hello @ladfrombrad, any update on this? :)

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Yeah! I’ve been working far too hard and meant to get back to you, and the main admin has had a IRL issue so I can’t nag them right now and they also mentioned they need to update the instance?

You had a gander through the docs/GitHub to see if an existing thing lives for scheduled posts and could be even hosted by a numbnuts here on a spare Pi etc?

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

So, I just had a gander myself and this is pretty involved

github.com/RikudouSage/LemmySchedule

Maybe there’s some existing thing I’m missing but it would be cool :/

RA2lover, to general in Where do you plan to go once Burggit shuts down?
@RA2lover@burggit.moe avatar

I still have genuinely no idea.

Swore myself off reddit after ther API fiasco and removal of .compact mode, but i’m not aware of other general-focus reddit-alternatives that don’t act worse than reddit in some aspect.

OrcishOatmeal, to announcements in [Important Post] Here's the situation.

Sad to see it go like some others, and hopefully the sharkey thing will get popular

Also, is there any way to backup my account/favourites?

nofrefan, to general in Where do you plan to go once Burggit shuts down?

Most of the alternatives seem to be very hard to get into. Baraag wants a sample of your own artwork for an account, but I’m not an artist. Most others, like shota.house, need an invite and then still need a justification, and I have no idea what to even write there…

MishikoYuki, (edited )
@MishikoYuki@burggit.moe avatar

Dang, Baraag has closed applications to non-artists again? I guess I can understand it since they get ~3M visits/month which is far more than Burggit ever did, but it’s still a shame.

You can still create an account on another instance that federates with Baraag like pawoo.net or mstdn.jp, and you’ll be able to follow artists on Baraag from there. Looking at its about/rules section bae.st seems to be a more free-speech oriented instance that also federates with the lolisho side of Mastodon and doesn’t have these sign-up restrictions.

diff,
@diff@burggit.moe avatar

if you’re considering microblog instances like baraag and shota.house, what’s wrong with burggit’s sharkey instance? Do you not like Sharkey specifically? You can follow baraag creators from there if that’s what you wanted to do on baraag.

nofrefan,

Okay, to be be quite honest, I’m just completely baffled by this sharkey thing. By now I don’t even know how to find it anymore. I saw it for a while while the lemmy instance was down, and I never got what it even is, what it does. Nobody ever explained it to, it was just like “here’s a sharkey instance”, as if that’s a thing that everybody knows what it is, when I have never before or since then even heard that word outside of burggit.moe.

I think it has something to to with mastodon, but even then, the details or how it offers anything beyond mastodon are completely fuzzy to me.

diff,
@diff@burggit.moe avatar

basically that place IS pretty similar to mastodon. it’s just a different fediverse micro-blogging application.

if you’re familiar with mastodon, there’s a UI mode that’s similar to mastodon. After making an account, on the left bar, click on “more” then “switch UI” then select “classic”. that makes Sharkey look a bit more like mastodon. If you have any trouble after that, I’m @diff over there. I’m still learning some things myself, but I got all the basics down.

diff,

@diff not sure if the users in this thread can see this (I don't know how the federation between lemmy and sharkey works) but this is me posting from my sharkey account

nofrefan,

This is visible from the lemmy instance at burggit.moe.

nofrefan,

Okay, I just learned that it is a completely, utterly different experience. To be honest, I just never even tried to make one, because from what you can see at the outset, it doesn’t look like there’d be a point…

diff,
@diff@burggit.moe avatar

yeah the logged out page was a bit blank when I joined. I didn’t really know what it would look like until I made one.

mens,

Baraag is microblogging while lemmy and reddit do entirely different thing. But if you just want to goon, you can browse most of baraag’s content from another instance. You just need to check your instance has wanted federations.

diff, to announcements in [Important Post] Here's the situation.
@diff@burggit.moe avatar

as long as the Sharkey instance is able to stay up, I’ll be okay. I’m a bit sad about my communities and the posts I made, but that’s mostly all. I hope not having to worry about lemmy anymore will make things easier for you guys

“an Android”?

As in a ROM or a device? 🤔

Yeah, that would be great. It would also improve activity and engagement level in this community.

Or better yet, try it on a device with an up-to-date chip that actually has some processing power and see that there would be no long term difference.

mbestavros,

Now compare Chrome with Firefox with a bunch of privacy and adblock extensions ;)

I have! IIRC, Firefox doesn’t see a particularly large impact (for better or worse) with uBlock Origin installed, though I haven’t run a direct comparison in a while. Adblocking is great, but I wouldn’t hold up better battery life as a guaranteed benefit.

try it on a device with an up-to-date chip that actually has some processing power and see that there would be no long term difference.

First of all: thanks to some fantastic community testers, we do know now that Firefox runs far better on Qualcomm chips. It’s still a little worse on battery relative to Chrome, but compared to Tensor it’s night and day.

Second: I think this attitude is too dismissive. Firefox running best on the latest Qualcomm flagship doesn’t change the fact that it runs atrociously on Pixels. I’m a big fan of Firefox, and I want it to run well for the largest set of users possible - including Pixel users! Hopefully, shining a light on areas where Firefox falls behind can help the engineering team close the gap not just on Pixels but on all devices.

Does the Infinity Reddit app still work?

Cheradenine,

Its still actively being developed last update was 5 days ago

github.com/Docile-Alligator/Infinity-For-Reddit

I still sometimes use the old version for search redirects, that works. I just opened it and went to ‘all’, that worked too. This was in anonymous mode as I don’t have an account.

Possibly pertinent is that I never updated to the new version. I don’t know if that matters or not. I also don’t know if I scrolled for awhile whether I would get rate limited. I’m not taking one for the team to find out

If you’re after the free version then search for khoalas build on github

Deebster, to android in I made a tool to measure the battery impact of different Android web browsers - here's what I learned!
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

I’m curious to know the impact of ad-blockers - I didn’t see you it mention in your post or blog, so I’m assuming you tested with stock browsers. Also, did you clear history and data from your Android install since it sounds like you’d normally use that?

I’m assuming that ad-blockers would be a net benefit to both battery and performance, given that in a way it’s an optimisation. The boost from removing data and computation (that the user doesn’t want anyway) must be far higher than the overhead of the plugin, right?

mbestavros,

did you clear history and data from your Android install since it sounds like you’d normally use that?

I didn’t for the Chrome/Firefox comparison I did in my post, but I rarely use either browser as a default, so I doubt it would have a huge impact.

I’m curious to know the impact of ad-blockers

I’ve tested a ton of Chromium derivatives with built-in adblocking (e.g. Brave, Vivaldi, Cromite), and all of them were substantially the same as Chrome. Firefox with uBlock Origin seemed to be mostly the same, but I admit that impression is anecdotal - I haven’t done a direct comparison.

Either way, I don’t think adblocking is bad, so if you want to block ads go for it.

If the sharekey , at least will be up, then the sadness will not be that long. Was good while it last . Glad , there was people with balls which trully understand what does it meqn free speech and what bounderies between fictional and reality. I hope your health will be improving as well as financial situation.

Question about shota.nu . It was developed byone of you and hosted on the same server or it has its source code deployed and ready to use its services?

Kbin instance was hard to maintain as well or too expansive?

Disabled,
@Disabled@burggit.moe avatar

Kbin has many of the same issues lemmy does, specifically there’s no way to clear old image cache making it essentially a growing storage nightmare. There’s also been no updates to the software in over 4 months and the last time burger tried updating it, everything broke, forcing us to go to a backup.

It feels like it would be going down a similar rabbit hole where the expense the instance would require to keep running would just grow and grow, and I wouldn’t be able to shoulder such a growing expense.

However, we’d be willing to look into setting up mbin as the project matures, since it’s getting updates rather frequently.

as far as shota.nu. It’s running open-source software called linx-server
