@miketango Being able to book earlier doesn't change that though...?

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@Katti yeah, FCFS is fine. I just prefer to have a fixed schedule when I go into an event. And I would prefer the shifts that are already foreseeable in advance anyway.

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@Katti then the way angels operate is just fundamentally incompatible with how I operate. Kinda sad :(

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@feuerrot ja okay wow

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@miketango If I want to do a lot of work, what's bad about that? I guess I just have a different mindset

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@michik also a good solution

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@michik @pennylane @miketango my idea was kind of that in reverse, as I said in my second post. But it seems that the core objectives of the Engelsystem are different from what I thought

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@miketango yeah okay

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@Katti I can only compare it to the security team at the furry con I volunteer at. There, you click together a shift schedule weeks before the event, everyone knows when they need to do what, you can choose between various tasks, and that works great. For ad-hoc shifts, there's a supervisor / shift coordinator that takes care of finding people spontaneously. [...]

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@Katti [...] But I also realise that this is a bit different in scale, since the team is usually around 100 members and everything is well planned out in advance.

I guess being in a specific team at Congress would lock me in to a specific kind of shift, which I would find too restrictive

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@Katti yeah... I guess I'll never be able to get a reward for doing shifts, it'll have to stay at a few hours just for fun

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@Katti yeah, no I get that, I didn't mean to say it was the only reason I'm doing it. It's just a bonus I'll never be able to reach, so I do some shifts for fun but not overdo it

what weird edge cases am i missing now that apparently make it reasonable to disallow subtracting one time from another one?

cato,

cato stop you're making assumptions about date and time again. this is when a big red warning light should activate

Spotify you fucking dipshits. They just cancelled my subscription because I forgot to agree to the new price. They initially reminded me THREE MONTHS AGO. They could have at least sent out a reminder like "hey, we're gonna cancel it if you don't agree within the next week". Now I gotta re-subscribe in February.

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@SirTux I didn't open the app, I just use it via Android Auto haha

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@darkrat I'll have to wait until it runs out in February... and I didn't get a reminder in December

I just noticed that Mastodon, that party pooper totally ignores the "Speak as a cat" rewritten text. :neocat_sad:

Mastodon, the official party pooper of the fediverse.

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@garfieldairlines huh, doesn't your server change the text in the post itself? or what do you mean?

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@garfieldairlines yeah i don't. but how, if not by changing the content of the post itself, would that work? Like, how can Mastodon just "ignore" it?

Gerne Boost :) danke!

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@mwfc @flipdot stimmt, guter Punkt. Mal schauen, was sie sagen :D

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

@casandro meiner hat zumindest kein Funkmodem. Aber das ist ja auch egal, mich interessiert ja, was aus einem etwaigen Modem dann zum Anzeiger hin rausginge.

I got two new displays today!

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

As expected, the font EEPROM dumps clearly show that the font image data is just uncompressed pixels.

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

Funnily enough, back in 2013, I came across a geocache in Kassel that had an LED platform display mounted to a lamp post on a sidewalk. When you came close, it showed you the coordinates for the next stage. I have now learned that this was actually right next to SaF's (the manufacturer) premises - hence why there was just a random display mounted there - and the geocache owners got them to collaborate. And now, I finally have a display made by SaF myself. Too bad they're bankrupt now.

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

Interesting - the LED modules in this display aren't actually made by SaF themselves. They're off the shelf LUM-512H modules by Rohm Semiconductor. Never seen that before!

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

Strange - if I press the reset button on the controller, it shows the Hello world message for a few seconds. That doesn't happen on a power cycle.

cato,
@cato@chaos.social avatar

Giving up for now since I have no lead on how to find info about the communication protocol. I could always reverse engineer the protocol between main controller and LED row controllers, or even control the LED modules directly, but that's for another day.
